Horizontal Cloning

I am struggling with the concept of horizontal cloning. The only advantage I see with it is that you can see all of your application servers in one management console.

On the disadvantage side, it leaves no room for rolling upgrades. You are forced to take down you complete web install for the duration of an EnterpriseOne SP upgrade.

I have come to the unorthodox opinion that you are better off having multiple load balanced autonomous instances of WebSphere.

Any thoughts... What am I missing?
