Can I apply an Xe PP to E8.9?

Hi List,
I have a stupid question here, if someone could help me out!?

I was handed a CD with a product package to apply to E8.9. Problem is that the PP was created under Xe. After my initial refusal I was asked to try to apply it anyway. I had a good idea of what I thaught the client should do with the CD, but they want an educated answer.

Seriously, I need a technical reason as to why I cannot apply an Xe PP to E8.9. Would the system not let me if I tried, would it simply not work because of the difference in version? Are the Central Objects tables different between Xe and E8.9 ?
Or am I wrong all the way and it can be applied somehow?
I did not find any document on KG that would clearly answer my question.

Thanks for any answer, Gerd

You should not even be able to. First thing that is checked is release level, and if they don't match, you can't apply. Now as far as "forcing" it to, yes, it can be done...but why? It would be unsupported and could potentially cause all sorts of issues as 8.9 was written to use unicode and a XE object may or may not be able to deal with the data it sees in unicode tables.

My approach to this request would be to determine the alterations done to the XE objects and retro-fit it.

Regards,

Jim,
if it only was as easy as just retrofitting some apps. In our case it is whole subsystem build from tens of apps, tables and reports.

If you don´t mind, how would I force it? I am uneasy about it myself, but I wanted some clearcut facts. We would avaluate the risc ourselves, if we only knew it exactly, and take it from there.

Thanks for your answer, Gerd

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. Just kidding. Actually, it may be even more difficult, as I've only "forced" them prior to 8.9 when the DS local DB was MS Access. Now that the DB is MSDE, I'm not even sure it can be done, easily that is.

Perhaps some of the other hackers can help out.

Regards,

Gerd,

You did not find any documents in the Knowledge jungle for that absurd request because it won't work and you would be negligent in your CNC duties to attempt it. Tell the customer to fure o CD onde o sol não brilha.

Gerd,

We had a situation where we needed to apply a PP created in Xe to an ERP8
installation and although it initially failed to load the ASU, some nursing
of the tables in the ASU access database got it to go in after all
(unfortunately I don't know what the tweaks were).

However, I would have thought that Xe and EO8.9 are too far apart to even be
able to nurse a PP in.

an MSDE database can be 'administered' by SQLServer enterprise manager /
Query analyzer - so you can still amend the details in the PP database

Sounds like good advice, Gregg.
But I need to refrase it a little to keep my job.
Thanks, Gerd

Did you get this working?

The first reason why you wont be able to apply it straight forward is because your PP will have a database in .mdb format while as E8.9 will expect it to be in .mdf format

Secondly even it was not the case, the tables that a PP contains, have references to the release where it is being applied to, and those entries should match.Hence it would be impossible to apply such a PP using Normal JDE.

However if you are really desperate to apply the PP accross the Release(Something which i really would refrain from doing) i can tell you the way.

I have tried out this method for moving objects from Xe to ERP 8.0 .But cant really assure you if it can work in your case.

Pl mail me in case you want to go ahead with the plan

The other difference is spec structure between XE and B9. If you modify the
database release and changed it to MSDE database it still would not work. I
have a theory that would convert all the specs too but have not got time to
work on it.
Hope this helps
Thanks
