WebSphere 4.0

Good Morning/Afternoon All,

Just wondering if anyone has installed WebSphere 4.0, and if there are any
gotchas to look out for.

Thanks for the help,

Kevin

Kevin,

I've installed it a number of times. Just yesterday in fact...and one
thing that I ran into yesterday, though I'm not sure if it's a "gotcha"
or something stupid on my part, but I installed WAS 4.0.1 and then
created the repository DB using SQL 2000...after bringing the services up
and verifying I could do a snoop...I applied Fix Pack 5. This seemed to
break WAS each time I did it (the WAS Admin service wouldn't start).
However, I finally decided to blow the DB away, remove WAS and IBM HTTP,
and install again. This time I applied Fix Pack 5 before starting WAS
for the first time, and that did the trick.

Depending on your repository DB of choice, if you do elect to go with
SQL, I believe Fix Pack 4 and above support MS JDBC drivers, so you don't
have to use the third party Merant drivers. I've changed it out once,
however I don't know what you'd do to install it if you are installing
WAS with an earlier version (below 4.0.4), because at the point of DB
selection, the MS JDBC driver is not a choice.

Another tip, make sure that IIS is not installed if you are going to use
the IBM HTTP server, remove it if you have to prior to installing any WAS
components.

At the client I was at, we installed it straight from the JD Edwards
Installation Guide for Websphere 4.0 for JAS, and I don't believe we saw
anything that was not indicated in the manual.

Now, when you get to configuring the JAS, there are settings in the
JAS.INI that need to be checked, and there's an AS/400 connection string
example that is missing a value, so if you follow it, it won't work. But
other than that, it's pretty straightforward.

There's also a specific order in which you should generate serialized
objects for the first time. Don't just pick all the options and build.
There's a tech doc on the KG outlining the order in which you should
generate.

Regards,

Jim

Hi

Sure - I've installed Websphere 4 plenty of times. Its a lot easier to install than 3.5 - though be careful which license you go for. Single Server edition works just as well for a lot less price.

Depends,

If you're talking about the IBM Technology Foundation which includes IBM HTTP, WAS4.0 & WP4.1 it is the WORST install process I have ever seen. I have been in IT business 20+ years. And don't expect much help from the JDE support line !.. I found errors in the Install guide, JDE is still checking on it!...If you make an error it is not easy to fix the errors unless you are a Websphere guru. Best thing to do is at each step you complete successfully do a full backup. Then you can go back only one step instead of to the beginning. It will take about three weeks if you have never done it before.

If you are just talking WAS40ae it isn't too bad. Did you buy it from IBM or JDE ? It cost more but you get better help from IBM, at least for now.

Best of luck.

Kevin,

this install guide for SP21 is pretty good compared to previous install guides. However there are still some errors and the guide is pretty weak on the AS/400 side.

One thing that is just plain wrong is that for the AS/400 the OCM server MUST be defined. This should likely be the Enterprise server.

You're already on Update 7 and SP21 so you've got the perfect environment to upgrade to WAS40.

Unlike previous versions of WebSphere 4.0 is really easy to install and SP21 makes the JAS install easy. I've used DB2 UDB, DB2/400 and SQL Server for the WAS40 repository, each is pretty straight forward.

If you're looking at time frames then you can do the hardware & OS in 1 day, the entire JAS install & components can be done in 1-2 days and the eGeneration can be done in 1-2 days.

I'd investigate the JDE Tech Foundation upgrade as a means of obtaining WAS40. We're a JDE Reseller and this is a cost effective way of upgrading (sorry, doesn't apply to non JDE products).
