turning off the DS

Hi List,

I have a new installation of ERP8/SP21. Whenever I temporarely switch off
the DS, all fat clients are slow. Each time I open a new screen it stops
for some 10-15 seconds. Bringing the DS back up again resolves the issue.
Has anyone seen anything similar? What could OW possibly be looking for
on the DS while opening interactive programs?
I have no database on the DS! There is no development going on at this
point!
Thanks, Gerd

Gerd,

Do you have drives mapped to the deployment server on these workstation?
If yes, you may want to delete these drive mappings and try again.

It sometimes works better to use UNC connections to your deployment server
(if you must have them) than to have drive letters mapped.

Thanks,
James

Gerd,

You problem is most likely Media Objects. Do you have your media objects mapped to the Deployment Server? Even if you do not make use of the "Paperclip" functionality of OneWorld grids, OneWorld checks for attachments when opening most applications. When the DS is down, OneWorld times out looking for the media object share. The duration of this timeout is not controlled by the JDE.IN but rather by the network filesystem redirector.

I suggest that you move your media objects to a server that you intend to leave on. I personally like sticking them on the enterprise server as I consider attachments production data just like the database.

Regards,

Probably not a problem unless accessing but your help files for OneWorld are also on your DS under \Helps. You can move them but will have to change the entry in the jde.ini

ServerHelpPath=\\ONEWORLD\B7333\helps

If you move them, make sure when you apply updates you update your files.

Grant.

Gerd :

Your OneWorld clients are looking for Help Files on
\\deployment\b7333\helps.
Take a look at your client's JDE.INI, there's an entry pointing to Helps
folder.
Whenever OneWorld users launch a new form, client will look for its helps.

Grant,

Yes, I agree, the help files will be inaccessible if they are mapped to your DS and you turn it off.

In addition I have found that various OneWorld apps appear to hang under certain conditions when the attachment feature is used and the media object location is inaccessible. This comment is made from seat-of-the-pants experience at a variety of OneWorld sites. It does not seem to happen in every configuration. If I get the time I will try to verify this with a network sniffer. I like the scientific approach when I've got time and I hate to spread more OneWorld folk tales, there are enough of them out there. That being said I have found this particular situation to cause the freezes described by the original poster.

Regards,

Thanks for all the replies. I have not figured out yet what the true cause
for the freezes may be, whether it's the help files or the media objects.
Since we can continue to work by leaving the DS switched on it's not a show
stopper. Still we would like to find out.

Justin, if you ever find the time for your scientific approach I would be
very interested in the results. Also, what are the "certain conditions" you
are referring to? Unfortunatly I am not always at my client, otherwise I
would try to investigate further myself.

Thanks again, Gerd

Justin,

can you copy the Mediaobj-Folder to another server and change the queue-path?
regards

Herbert

Herbert,

Yes, you can move media object folders (queues) wherever you would like as long as it is accessible by a windows path and your users have security rights to the folders. On AS/400 installations I often move them to an IFS volume on the enterprise server.

Regards,

Re: RE: turning off the DS

Gerd,

"Certain situations" is my way of saying "I don't know". I have had this at a handful of customers. I suspect it depends on which apps are being used and whether or not attachments are being used. Another possibility is that some users are double clicking the upper left grid control which (I believe) causes a search for attachments. That being said I have seen the freeze with the DS off when just moving from Header to Detail screens. Since the problem was so easily addressed I have never sat down to do proper analysis.

You have challenged me! I will try to take a quick look at this over the next week or so. I am in the middle of a performance study anyway so I might as well get the network monitor on and see when the apps try to access the DS's media objects.

Regards,

RE: RE: turning off the DS

I tuned into this thread a bit late, so pardon me if this is irrelevant. I
have come across attachment performance issues on some sites and after much
searching deduced that the protocol order on the client workstation was the
cause. IPX seems to default itself to the top of the list, and surprise
surprise Win2k slows down dramatically when trying to access NT shares using
this protocol.
I have also found this to be a cause of poorly performing package
builds (if IPX is on the deployment server), and of painfully slow logon
times to solution explorer which accesses the HTML from the deployment
server.

Kieran Fitzgerald

Re: RE: turning off the DS

I think this would be very easy to verify if you rename either the HELP directory or the MEDIA OBJECTS directory, on your deployment server.
Just temporarily do this as a test, then you can turn it back on quickly.
