Portal Vs. Citrix

Hey,

Ok...I need a few solid opinions on this sublect.

We are currently in the process of attempting on a JDE solution. Currently we are in some capacities using both the Portal and Citrix. WE want to make a definite decision on which solution we should go forward with. I have past experience with Citrix and despite its numerous headaches I guess you can say it works, on the other hand I don’t have that much JAS experience that is I have not used it in a live environment before. Based on our current needs I don’t think there are any functional areas that we cannot handle with JAS, but I am concerned with is the stability of JAS and being able to handle the processing that we are going to be doing. We will not be running MRP or anything like that but we will be processing shipments etc.

I know about the added support and third party support that exists between JDE, Citrix and Microsoft and the Print drivers nightmare.

Can anyone give me a solid opinion on this?

My advice to you...if you plan on being a JD Edwards ERP client for any
length in time...go portal.

ERP 9 and beyond is leveraged on IBM's WAS, Portal, Domino, etc....hence
the way of Citrix and Terminal Server in general is going bye-bye in the
eyes of ERP. Though ERP 9 and beyond will still support the platforms it
does today (with the exception of coexistence), they are making it more
and more difficult for anyone not using a IBM/DB2/UDB/Portal platform.

Any project in the scope phase currently, planning on sticking with ERP
X, should pretty much have strong business reasons not to go
WAS/JAS/Portal....

IMHO...of course.

At one of my clients, I have been running Citrix for 3 years since going
live with OneWorld. In the past year I have also installed the HTML/Portal
with Websphere 3.5 where some of the remote users are running. Because of
the initial investment in the Citrix platform, we are currently in no rush
to move our core users to HTML. The Citrix infrastructure is set and it
works well. However, clearly the HTML client is the future direction of all
ERP packages, including JDE. My current opinion is that the HTML SP20 is
not quite ready for prime time(although I think there are companies using it
for all users). I do hear good things in SP22 such as better sub-file
processing and no screen reloading everytime you press a button....thus
faster. If I was implementing a new system, I would go for the HTML SP22
(if you can get an early release). Also I see you are running Enterprise
SUN Solaris 420R Oracle 8.1.7.3.0.....I am not sure how that fits in with
the IBM Websphere/JDE deal or how IBM Websphere works with an Oracle
database, so you may want to ask JDE that question.
