Microsoft Server 2003

Is anyone testing OneWorld XE or ERP8.0 on MS Server 2003? Have any of you
with contacts at JDE heard of the state of their testing? We will be
upgrading from B7332 and NT4.0 this summer/fall and will probably skip XE
and go to ERP8.0. We've been planning on moving to Server 2000, but have
been hearing some wonderful things about up-time and stability on Server
2003.

B7332, SP17.1_E1, MSSQL 7.0, NT 4.0

Haven't heard anything about testing on this OS. And if I could offer an
opinion, with the release of ERP 9.0 and how different it will be
architecturally from all earlier releases of OW/ERP, I'd bet that
resources will used to ensure that ERP 9.0 is as solid as it can be on
existing OS platforms. Certification on OS's is generally slow (I'm
remembering Win2000), and since ERP 9.0 is going to be so huge of a
release, I'd put in Windows 2000 for your ERP 8.0, and if you can, have a
sandlot with W2003.

Hi there,

If I were you, I wouldn't like my company to be Microsoft Guinea Pig.
Let someone else suffer unstabilities and bugs of a brand new product
such as Server 2003.
According to my experience, Windows 2000 SP2 and SP3 is quite stable
(it's not Heaven but runs much better than NT4) according to
MS standards.

Regards, Sebastian

Actually the support for new MS OS is pretty fast. OneWorld was one of the first apps to be certified on W2K due to JDE's tight partnering with MS.

I guess that depends on what is the definition of "FAST"??

Since there was no support for W2K until after it was generally
available, I'd say that's slow. As with any partner program, you get the
software long before it is generally available so that you can certify
prior to the GA release...I have yet to see OneWorld/ERP ever be
certified for any new OS, DB, driver, etc. release prior to the GA of
that new whatever.

Many applications were touting W2K support even a year before it was
released.

But again, if your definition of 'fast' is 3-6 months after general
release, I would simply say we disagree on the definition.

I think that any definition should include a comparison between like applications. Saying that JDE is slow to support an OS because Solitaire and Free Cell are already certified is disingenious. As I said earlier, JDE is one of the first to get certification for MS OS's and you cannot get much faster than that.

Take a look at the link Alex provided and you'll see that nobody is certified on 2003 yet.

The original post was asking opinions on going with W2003...I wasn't
comparing OW to anything...when W2K came out, a client of mine had been
running OW B73.3.1 on W2K/SQL2K for close to a year before it was
"supported". I'm sure this is an appropriate time frame for any
ERP/CRM/etc. vendor, not appropriate if you actually thinking of
implementing this platform that isn't available yet, for a Enterprise
application that isn't available yet on the existing platforms.

Also, I simply stated that IMHO, certification for W2003 for the ERP 9.0
product would probably be on the bottom of the list, after certification
on all existing platforms. There are far too many issues to iron out for
existing and available platforms before allocating a lot of resources
towards making it work on a platform few, if any of their clients will
probably be moving to quickly. NT4 to W2K was a more "have to have"
because it offered such better stability, which as we all know is a very
elusive goal when your enterprise application is constantly changing (W2K
was a given for anyone who suffered through using NT4 TSE). Again, IMHO,
I don't think there will be as great a rush to upgrade from W2K to W2003.

But as a now off the air host used to say...that's my opinion, I could be
wrong.
