WebSphere Sizing - Windows 2000

It's been a while since we looked at Websphere and it looks like we have
to implement 4.x as they are dropping support for 3.5.

Using Windows 2000 as the JAS Server, how many users can hit this box
with good performance. The reason I ask is I see that have multiple
flavors of Websphere 4.x now, the Advanced Single Server Edition (one
machine only) and the Advanced Edition (multi-machine). Thanks,
Grant.

From what I can tell so far, there is really no real performance difference between the single server edition and the enterprise edition - providing you are looking only at a single machine. Obviously, the single server edition is easier to initially set up and configure than the enterprise edition - but the enterprise edition has some fun parts when multiple servers are used.

Now - as far as the performance running on Websphere on Win2K - well, it certainly looks a little better with SP20 from a scalability point of view. I was able to have my Quad Xeon (Pentium III - 550Mhz IBM Netfinity 7000 M10 with 2Gb RAM) run approximately 75 users through a script before seeing severe performance issues. Obviously, the websphere solution is a lot slower than a comparable Citrix solution - no matter how many users are on the machine - but because it is a lot more efficient with memory, it works relatively well as far as the scalability. I think with a lot of tuning and tweaking, and a lot more memory, I'd be able to see substantially more users. (Tested with ERP8.0 and SP20).

Heres the rub, however, from what I understand from other colleagues (I don't have my own AS400 to perform testing yet !) - Websphere is a lot more efficient on an AS400. I have not seen the difference side by side, but from the comments I have heard from AS400 customers running the websphere solution - it opened my eyes to believe that IBM certainly tuned Websphere specifically for OS/400 (surprise surprise - not !

course I can't prove it yet......IBM needs to lend me an AS400 so I can try it out head-to-head with a Win2K machine :p

I'd have to agree with Jon, though that's usually not hard to do. I've
actually seen a side by side comparison done at a site that had both
set-ups, W2K and AS/400. Now granted, IBM came in and did all the
installation, configuration, and tweaking on both platforms (who knows
what tricks may have been used), and there were no live user loads on
either box, but the 4 way AS/400, and let's see how many of you out there
remember (or as the case may be ADMIT to watching) Lost in Space, but the
AS/400 "crushed, killed, and destroyed" the 8 way XEON W2K box with the
clients' custom benchmarking scripts.

Of course, this is the AS/400 that we've been getting consistent 4 hour
FULL package builds on, so I'm thinking I might want to peek inside the
black box to see what is REALLY inside!!

Regards and Happy and Safe New Year to All

Thanks. We'll be putting our Websphere on a dual PIII 1.4Ghz with 1.2Gb
Ram. We tried it on our AS400 Model 720 and it ran poorly compared to
having it on a separate box. We're on SP19 and due to XP PCs and specs
not loading with update packages we have to upgrade to SP20 or above.
We're looking at going to SP21.
