NT Print Server

Does anyone have any advice as to the most sensible way to configure an NT print server within XE? We currently run on an AS400 platform, but we would like to introduce an NT print server that handles all of our network printers. The issue I see is that when setting up your default printers for various users, you have to specify a host (based on the definition of your printer). So if you atttempt to set up a default printer based on an NTSVR printer definition, you get prompted to enter the 'Host', which according to the data selection, must be an enterprise(or application) server that has been defined as an NT box.

I'd be interested to hear some opinions on the most efficient way to route(print) pdf's to an NT print server when the UBE's are running on an AS400 enterprise server...

thanks in advance!

Setup remote outq's on the '400 to go to the individual printers. Our '400 has remote outq's. We have a W2K server, running as our print server for our citrix client - it also runs the formscape software. Works for us.

Another suggestion is to create a Remote Queue to proint to the NT Printer server. and user the NT shared printer name in the Remote out queue RMTPRTQ parameter. In this case all the OW printer jobs will go through the NT Printer Server. This method is less maintenance and easy to map the NT Printers and the AS/400 Printer.

Don't forget - to use remote queing, you will need to use the lpd service to "share" the printers on Win2k / NT / XP for the as/400 to access them..

Hi Dave,

there are a lot of possible ways to print from the AS/400. If you use
direct printing from AS/400 outqueues there is no need for a W2k server. On
the IBM Web-Site you'll find all supported ASCII printers(
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&uid=nas1b44a2cf4ba778d83862568
250053649f ). This document contains all relevant printer driver settings
for AS/400 outqueues like host print transforms, data stream types,
capability of remote outqueue printing etc.

If you only want to redirect your output to a W2k server you do not oly
have to setup the remote outqueues. You also have to obey certain settings
which are described in another IBM document
(http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&uid=nas1b49aa3cf3ce97d0d86256

When configuring a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) to a Windows NT Server or
Windows 2000 Server, the following conditions must be met:

1 The printer must be configured in the Windows Printers folder on the
Windows NT Server, and the printer must be shared.
2 The TCP/IP Printing Service must be started on a Windows NT Server, and
the Print Services for Unix must be started on a Windows 2000 Server. It is
also recommended that these be set up to start automatically rather than
manually.
3 The RMTOUTQ must be configured with the Remote system (RMTSYS) parameter
set to the host name of the Windows NT Server or the Windows 2000 Server or
with the RMTSYS parameter set to *INTNETADR and the Internet address
(INTNETADR) parameter set to the IP address of the Windows NT Server or the
Windows 2000 Server.
4 The RMTOUTQ must also be configured with the Remote printer queue
(RMTPRTQ) parameter set to the share name of the printer on the Windows NT
Server. This parameter is case-sensitive.
Note: The Print Services for Unix component is not be available with all
versions Windows 2000. If this is unavailable, a third-party Line Printer
Daemon (LPD) program must be installed and configured on the Windows 2000
PC. Once this is done, refer to the section on Information Concerning Using
a Third-Party Line Printer Daemon (LPD) Program below.

Thanks to all that replied... I think I'm now ready to get this thing configured. Great advice from everyone!
