CNC Admin PL/SQL scope

Hi Folks,

Is it normal, and/or accepted best practice for a CNC Admin to be allowed to
run PL/SQL against the OneWorld Xe database?.
If yes, what procedures/policies, if any, do you use to manage same.
If no, how do you manage any required updates of this nature?.

This is obviously a "balance point" to be reached on above and your
feedback/experiences would be much appreciated.

Sean:

As the CNC/System Administrator I do NOT run any PL/SQL against the
database. We have on staff two Oracle DBAs and they have sole responsible
for any adjustment to the database.

However, on need be, the DBAs have granted our Programmer rights to help
correct data entry problems. But those rights are removed once the problem
has been corrected.

Seán,

I lost my detailed reply. Here's an abbreviated version.

If you can't trust the CNC Admin with SQL level access to the data then this person probably can't be trusted to administer the application that a substantial portion of the enterprise is dependant on for day to day operation. In addition, since this person can already view and/or modify all the data in OneWorld - they should be fired before they really screw something up!

Seriously Seán in my opinion a CNC Admin should have SQL ability listed as one of the job requirements.

Regards,

Sean,

I agree with Larry.

A CNC Admin does need to do a little sql from time to time. If it's not for business data then you certainly need it for environments and stuff that is lies around that area.

Having DBAs isn't a problem, as long as they know what they are doing and what impact it has, so you don't have to do the small daily things where JD might not have the answer for, but still as a CNC admin you need to have sql rights not matter what system you're on.
