TAM Locking on Terminal Servers

Has anybody experienced any issues running XE SP20 on Terminal Servers under heavy load?

Any TAM locking issues in particular?

Regards,
Alex.

I have never seen TAM files get "locked" unless there are an unmanageable number of users logged into a single citrix server with not enough memory. The paging slows the users down to such a degree, that it might be possible to see tam file locks start to hold up the users.

If, however, you keep the numbers of users and the amount of paging at relatively steady levels, you should never see TAM file locks.

Thanks, it was my understanding too, but we have encountered this issue during stress testing at a customer site.

It was conducted on an undersized server, so my expectations are that the issue may in fact disappear once the application is moved to the proper terminal server boxes, but I was getting suspicious that perhaps SP20 could have some issues there?

It manifests itself as an "FDASPEC file is in use by another user. Please, try again in minute." message every now and again...

Alex.

We have that issue also now and then.
It's got nothing to do with SP20 I can tell you as we run production with SP16 (one off 19).

Best thing we than can do is make sure the people log out from that server and reset it. Don't know why that happens but fortunate it will be only that one server that does it while the ather production servers keep running without problems at that time.

So, again, it it not a SP20 thing.

We to have experienced this occasionally. Usually once the server has been
rebooted the lock is released. Only once have we needed to redeploy JDE to
that server. Have you turned JITI off, that can cause it to happen
frequently.

I have seen it caused by a user disconnecting whilst the Data selection
screen is loading or waiting, especially if they accidentally open another
screen on top of it so they don't know it is still prompting them.

Re: RE: TAM Locking on Terminal Servers

First of all, if you are JITI'ing anything down, yes - there is a good chance of locking up the GLBLTBL spec file or the DDDICT files.

You must ALWAYS deploy a full GLBLTBL or DDDICT to a production Citrix/Terminal Server - by running R92TAM and R98CRTGL locally.

Of course, for any CRP/Development or other testing servers which have frequent update package installations - yes, there is a chance that you can "deadlock" two sessions through a JITI.

Of course, the question originally was aimed toward whether this deadlock was to occur in production for the larger system, and if the data dictionary and global table files are built immediately after a package deployment - then the answer is that it will be highly unlikely.

I am aware of those, but this one locks FDASPEC, nothing to do with JITI and
such...

It gives a "retry" button, and works the next retry, so it's not critical,
but annoying nevertheless.
