RE: Web client (HTML)

check out redbook: "J.D.Edwards OneWorld Xe Implementation on IBM eServer
iSeries Servers"
Try the link:

You can also get to it from the iSeries support website:
http://www-919.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/developer/solutionservers/jde/links.html

The redbook is iSeries based, but has some discussion of the architecture
and details of a web implementation that fits all platforms.

In general, JAS refers to the Java Application code that is put out by JDE,
which effectively acts as a virtual client. It is used for both the HTML
and the Java based client, although from what I've heard, the Java client
is on the way out. (Not sure that is a statement from JDE, just my
impression) The JAS server is also often referred to as a webserver. It
runs IBM WebSphere as the application server. The JAS server can be run on
any of the supported platforms, (OS/400, W2K, AIX, Solaris, HP UX), since
WebSphere runs on all of those platforms.....which is why JDE has
standardized on WebSphere vs other applications servers.

It can be a separate box from your other servers or it can be consolidated
if you have the capacity, although care needs to be taken in planning the
security if you are running the HTTP server on the same box as your ERP
application and opening up to the internet...probably not recommended, but
from a workload point of view it is fine.

regarding switching or comparing with Citrix. If there isn't a business
reason to move and things are relatively stable.....consider sticking with
it. Personally I like HTML, but there is a lot to be said for
stability.....If it aint broke......

My observations have been that HTML is the future direction, so there may
be more compelling reasons in the future. Most of the functionality of
Citrix is now there with HTML, but it seems power users or heads down users
prefer the Citrix client. Although I have heard of some heads down
enviornments using HTML and being perfectly happy with it. Cost may be
one reason to move. A given box can probably run at least 2 times,
probably 3 times the number of HTML users than it could Citrix, but I'd
think that would be more of a factor for new environments than existing,
since existing already have the Citrix servers.

Good Luck!
