Here is what I have given to other people that have asked this of
me...
Full Clients
The JD Edwards OneWorld full client is installed onto a workstation
that
meets the OneWorld minimum technical requirements and has all required
supporting software installed. The full client is required for most
activities of the OneWorld system administrators and developers.
Advantages
+ The full desktop client is the most robust installation option.
+ With this client installed on a desktop, users are able to use
the
OneWorld application sets, perform system administration tasks, and
development activities.
+ Users may create and modify OneWorld report versions and receive
new
versions with out any administrative tasks being performed.
+ Ability to use either the OneWorld Explorer or Solutions
Explorer menu
systems.
+ Rapid deployment of software changes/modification
Disadvantages
+ The administration of the OneWorld full client can become
cumbersome if an
organization has too many fat clients.
+ The OneWorld Administrator must ensure that all desktop systems
meet the
minimum requirements and upgrade when necessary.
+ The full OneWorld client requires a ôhealthyö desktop system
with a
minimum of 128 MB of memory and at least a 9GB hard drive to install
two
OneWorld pathcodes.
+ Does not function well, if at all, over a Wide Area Network
(WAN)
connection.
Terminal Server/Citrix
The Widows Terminal Server/Citrix client allows an organization to
install
the OneWorld client onto one or more servers and publish the
application to
many users, 30 û 45 users per server. This client does support report
version design activities but no other development.
Advantages
+ Citrix client can run on any platform (Dos, Win3.1, 95, 98, ME,
NT, 2000,
Sun, Linux, Mac) without regards to the OneWorld desktop requirements.
+ Administration of the desktop is simplified by not having to
install the
OneWorld package on the end users desktop.
+ Able to support 30 û 45 users from a common server.
+ Optional ôLoad Balancingö of 2 or more Citrix Server to provide
high
availability of the servers.
+ Ability to use either the OneWorld Explorer or the Solutions
Explorer menu
systems.
+ Support for most administrative tasks.
+ Rapid deployment of software changes/modifications, though it
requires
users to exit the OneWorld system while changes are deployed.
+ Provides access to LAN, WAN, and dial in users
Disadvantages
+ Cost of Microsoft and Citrix licensing (approx $150 -
$250/user)
+ Internal staff needs a working knowledge of Citrix to support
the Servers
+ Although this client type supports rapid deployment of software
changes,
users are still required to exit the system for the changes to be
deployed.
This can be a non-issue if Citrix Load Balancing is implemented.
HTML Client
The OneWorld application can be published via a Web server to LAN, WAN
and
Web users by use of the HTML client. Clients can configure this to
publish
the OneWorld menus or the JD Edwards OneWorld Portal system.
Advantages
+ The only required, client side software is a Web Browser
+ Minimal desktop support for the OneWorld application
+ Provides access to LAN, WAN and Dial-in users
+ Provides 40 û 50 users access to the OneWorld system via one
server.
+ Optional Load Balancing and Clustering of Web Servers to provide
high
availability.
Disadvantages
+ To support large number of users per server you must have a
4-way server
with approx. 4 GB of memory.
+ Cost of IBM WebSphere. JD Edwards will no longer supporting
WebSphere
Standard Edition, and requiring users to use Advanced Edition. At
last
check, Advanced edition was $10,000 per processor.
+ Must have working knowledge of IBM WebSphere
+ Must have separate server or high end workstation to support the
software
deployment to the OneWorld Web Server.
+ Software deployment to Web server is a lengthy process at best,
and users
must be out of the system during the entire process.
+ Some administrative changes to the OneWorld system, such as
security
changes, and file mapping changes, require the Web Server and
WebSphere to
be shut down and restarted. No users can be on the system during this
change.
+ No development or system administrative functions can run from
the HTML
client.
