We are soon upgrading to Xe, and we are interested in implementing the Java Server for OneWorld. Can anyone offer success or failure stories of the JAVA install for Xe. Thanks!!!

I just finished an installation of an Xe JAS server. We had good success,
except when it came to generating the java objects using the Java & HTML
Generator. I did the initial install with SP 13.1 and could not get the
Generator to run. I spent many days on the phone with JDE 'experts' and even had
an ATG manager on site to try and resolve the problem; but no one could figure
out why it wouldn't run. My resolution came when I installed SP14.1. SP14.1
provided a newer version of the Generator and it resolved the problem.
Other helpful hints, use Websphere Advanced (not Standard) Edition. The minimum
tech requirements on the Knowledge Garden say you can use either, but in talking
with other consultants, they experienced the best performance with the Advanced
edition. Also, the Advanced edition comes with DB2. With Standard, you would
have to purchase either Oracle or DB2 database (Websphere can only use Oracle or
DB2 database, not SQL to hold it's objects). Understanding Websphere is a
must! The simplest typo (such as an extra space while configuring Websphere)
can prevent Webpshere from running properly and can be very frustrating to find
and troubleshoot!

I agree with Mechele that you should try to go with the latest SP and the WebSphere (WS) Advanced edition. However, we were (eventually) successful installing with WS Standard edition and SP13.1. The WS configuration and Java Gen were the most frustrating portion of the installation to debug. Unfortunately, support was not terribly helpful with either of these things. Follow the doco as close to the letter as possible. We have WS installed on an NT machine and not the AS400.
I have the following thoughts and recommendations:
- WebSphere Standard requires an Admin Repository that had to be loaded to Oracle or a proprietary DB called InstantDB. There are known problems with InstantDB, but we have been successful with it thus far.
- When ordering WS, you have to ask IBM for version 3.0.1. What you will actually get on the CD is 3.0.2. At least this was what happened in my case. Note that the actual part number is 41L0844 for the Std Ed (the JDE doc is in error).
- Make sure you get the JAS SP that matches your installed OW SP.
- I was unsuccessful running the SP13.1 Java Gen on the same machine defined as the Web Server. I was successful with the Java Gen when I installed the JAS CD on my workstation and ran the Gen.bat from there.
- If your AS400, theres an apparant misprint in the JAS.ini settings. More a misinterpretation than an actual misprint. I don't remember off hand exactly what it was, but I'll dig it up if you need.
