Win2000 for developer workstations

JDE List,

As far as I can tell WinNT 4.0 is still the only supported desktop platform
for development within JDE OneWorld.

Has anyone had any success running Win2000 for a developer workstation? I
don't want to do this if JDE won't support it, however, if (m)any of you
have done it successfully I would like to hear your stories.

Also, if anyone has a document that outlines the process of making this
work, I would appreciate a copy of that too. Tips, Tricks and Gotchas would
be great too!

I've been using Win 2K for 6 months now on both B7331 and XE. There are things I don't like about Win 2K but they are not OneWorld specific. Given my druthers I'd rather be back on NT 4.

Hi James,

About 1.5 month ago I and some guys of us developed on WIN2000 fat client workstations at one of our partners.
The developers workstations were WIN2000 as well as the deployment and the enterprise server.
The OW platform was: XE SP 13, SQL (maybe 2000 SP 1, but I amn't sure in it)

The tasks that we have done there were approx the following:
* verifying the downloaded developments (by Product Packaging)
* minor modifications on existing OW APPLs/UBEs/BSVWs
* creating new developments (e.g. AR Interface, Invoice, Reports, etc.)

Effected object types were mainly:
* NER BSFNs
* Business Function DSTRs
* Custom BL (.dll)
* Processing Option DSTRs
* Report UBEs
* Table Conversion UBE
* TBLEs
* BSVWs
* Lots of APPL and UBE versions
* Lots of UDCs and MENUs
* (some Data Items, including Error Message type too)

We hadn't more problems there than we have on NT workstations under XE, so I haven't felt that WIN2000 developer workstations cause any special problem in itself.

You can see, we haven't developed too much on this configuration, so consider the other's oppinions, experiences too.

James,
make sure that you do not run any WTS Services at the desktop and you will
be fine. Also check that the user have full premission to create, modify,
change.... at this workstation. The user should have Power User rights for
the B7 directory.

Hi Larry,

You might be able to help me with a Win 2k & Xe problem.

I'm finding the Xe on a fat client (and on Citrix for that matter) wants to
update the registry settings and therefore a user needs PowerUser rights to
their PC or else that get an unexpected error from the DLLRegisteryServer
error.

Are you guys having this problem and how did you get around it?

Re: RE: Win2000 for developer workstations

The quick way is to give the user Local Administrator privileges on that PC - not network administrator - local only.

Another method described here on the Forum/List is to grant write privileges to a OneWorld specific set of keys in the registry.

We chose to go with the first option. Our network administrators were scared for a while that a user would hose their PC with all those privileges but it hasn't been an issue yet.

Hello jdcmwilson,

As where written in this list, and as I've determined by myself, you
can't build full server package on W2K.
IMHO, this issue is related a little bit to development.

Well, just to give my sixpence worth, I've had developers working on w2k and
built full server pkgs for the as/400 (yes, as/400 and no problems!), both
with no problems. try it and see.

You can't? Why not?
I've been trying to do just that for last couple of days, so any advice
would be helpful.

We're granting priviledges through the registry and it works just fine. On an NT or
W2K workstation, you go into regedt32, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, to software, then
JDEdwards and make sure users have full control access rights. This will allow them
to accept and install a package without admin rights.

I can't try to do it for as/400 because I don't have it. :)

Here I just put letter from List (08.10.2000) which describes the problem.
I can only confirm that I had absolutely the same problem on my
installation (see signature). When I tried to build full server package on NT workstation, problem
disappeared. I didn't make any deep investigation of this issue, so I
can't say what's the reason of the problem on W2K workstation.
Unfortunately I'm not on the site just right now, so I don't have
logs on my hand.

Any input is highly appreciated.

Yaroslav

Subject: RE: Windows 2000 Client running Full Server Package

You cannot build full packages from a Win2K workstation. I had the same
problem. Had to go back to NT 4.0 for Full package builds.
On the Win2K workstation I no problems with update packages, just full
package builds.

I am not real familiar with Win2000 but can you not make the user a local
administrator without giving them admin rights on the network? I know you
can do this with WinNT and it works great.

Local admin, not network admin.

Works for me.

James

Re[2]: Win2000 for developer workstations

Yes you can make a user local admin w/o making them network admin. We do it
here.

Hi All,

Following this thread, I've included the (Domain) user into the Local 'Power Users' Group, thus the Win 2000 registry was updated (automagically) when the user logged into Xe.
PS1 One Little Correction: if user is member of the Local Power Users group, the jde.log will show errors such as:
"RegOpenKeyEx failed with the Windows error number 5 (Access is denied)..."
Replaced the user into the Local Admin grp and no errors logged anymore :)

And my question: will this Developer Win2000 wkstn be able to build full packages? is obsolete.

Thank you,

Andrew,
I did not quite understand <<don't forget the C++ and just as important SP1 ! !>>
Would you explain it to me?
