Who\'s role is OMW Administrator ?

Hey all

Heres a quick topic to get some blood boiling in the forum...

My question is - who is the OMW administrator ? I mean who controls the OMW Activity Rules and the OMC ? I am personally biased in favour of the onsite CNC Administrator - but have heard of customers placing their applications people and/or Development staff in charge of creating OMW rules. What are your comments on this ? I don't specifically see any recommendations from JDE on whose role this is - and am sure someone should be highly recommending the CNC admin.

RE: Who\'s role is OMW Administrator ?

I believe that the correct answer is:

There is someone who is responsible for the development process (the
promotion process). That person makes sure that the right objects are
checked out and that they are right before being delivered back into
production. At JDE, that person is called the PVC manager - PVC means
product version control. Whoever owns this process should own the OMW
administration. In my opinion, other choices would be less than optimal.

Re: Who\'s role is OMW Administrator ?

Here's a stupid question...

I want to generate my custom apps in HTML/JAVA. My JAS Server is setup; I have
followed the steps for setting the 'Generator Client' workstation added
webadmin=1 to jde.ini etc... Registered .dll etc...

BUT where is the executable for the HTML/JAVA Generator???

Is it on a Menu, in the OMW, or maybe my bin32???

RE: Who\'s role is OMW Administrator ?

It depends on the kind of work being done and the size of the organization. Big organizations can have a dedicated person that is the OMW administrator (PVC manager) and multiple project managers that coordinate their work through this person (as should the CNC). Small organziations will have people doing multiple jobs and that might mean the CNC does it -- but my guess would be the developers will do it themselves (they act as the project manager).

If the work is major (eg, multiple objects, new objects, several developers) this implies a project manager. The analysis should have identified what needs to be fixed/created/modified before the project is even started. At this point, the project manager should proceed to create a project and check out/create the objects from the list presented in the analysis and identify the people involved.

If the work is minor (eg, bug fix, add a screen) then there should be an existing project for each developer (simplest scenario) that is used to manage the objects and people. This implies the developers run it themselves acting as project manager.

Re: Who\'s role is OMW Administrator ?

Sean,

The executable is called Gen.bat. It is located on your jas server. Go to
windows explorer and drill down to the drive where jdedwardsoneworld is
installed. Go to the jas directory and you should see it there
(x:\jdedwardsoneworld\b7333\jas\gen.bat). There is also another generator
executable called AppGen. It should be located in the same place. JDE doesn't
recommed using AppGen (they say it doesn't build the objects correclty), but I
have heard from the field that it works fine. Try gen.bat first.

Hope this helps.

Re: Who\'s role is OMW Administrator ?

You have to create a directory called tempjar and copy
four files from your web server into this directory.
The four files are collections.jar, gen.bat, jas.jar,
and owresource.jar. Also, you have to copy the
genapp.ini to your winnt directory. Then go to a
command prompt and get into the tempjar directory and
run gen.bat.

Where do you create the tempjar folder, on the generation machine?

Re: Who\'s role is OMW Administrator ?

Jon,
my 2c CAD:
Today we finished the OMW party we had (our respected CNC and myself), here in Toronto, at the the JDE Canada Training facility; I hope I'm still able to make myself clear ... and believe me, it is somewhat a hard thing to do on a Friday after ... noon!

Together (the CNC and I):
1 - We submitted the same proposal using two different approaches (remember I am the developer?), then
2 - We proceeded to a hot brainstorm,
3 - Voted,
4 - Had a Florida style recount and finally
5 - Decided: You are RIGHT!
The OMW Aministrator role will be taken over by the CNC.
She will enact on the Configuration & Setup in ALL that deals with: Action Rules, Project Statuses, Roles & Owners, ... and so on.
You remember (if you don't, see info below, added to my signature field - whose SIZE, ERIC, you still did not increase it!!!) that we have some system here, don't you?
Other sites are of different sizes, thus different approaches and therefore ... different decisions (nonetheless technically democratic, if I may add).
Have a nice weekend,

Re: Who\'s role is OMW Administrator ?

Having a professional weekend :) (Doing a large 7331-Xe upgrade for a big client, and having to babysit the 5 language merges....)

Interesting thoughts coming on this subject. I think that the development teams should be policing their own activity rules - ie the statuses and the actual fundamental transfer rules - but the behind-the-scenes stuff (such as the physical transfers from LOCAL to Central Objects for Check-in) need to be implemented by the CNC staff.

You see the issue here - the tool itself is very good - but providing functionality such as the "save" function can cause more issues than it solves. Save will transfer objects to a central repository without actually checking them in. Good I guess for a "quick save" feature - but without someone monitoring the save areas, they will quickly end up as dump-buckets which will not be correctly managed.

The other trick here is that developers often do not understand the package build processes. In fact, very few development people understand how Central Objects actually affects development. OMW really replaces Object Librarian through and through - and Object Librarian has always been "managed" by the CNC Tech. Since the CNC tech also usually maintains the package builds - they should be the ones chasing the developers to ensure that the objects are correctly checked in and transferred.

Hence I think that Adrian is right to move the responsibility of the OMW into the CNC Tech's hands - though the actual design of the processes should be created by the Development management.

Something to certainly keep in mind with any Xe implementation now....
