Subject: What to Delete

I'm working on Xe off a Thinkpad laptop. I was trying
to install a package that
I just built and deployed, but I ran out of space on my
C:\ drive. The
Just-in-Time install video starts up, and I get the
following error message:
there is insufficient disk space in your system's
temporary directory to run
setup.

I have three environments loaded on my machine:
Development, Prototype, and
Production. I don't really need Prototype -- is there a
way I can delete a few
GB of files from the Prototype Environment using the
Windows Explorer? Or would
that be a bad idea? Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Ian (Snowbound in Philly)

Delete the PY7333 path code - that is about 1.8 GB on my standalone. You
can also drop the help files and, assuming that you have your TP rigged up
as a deployment server too, any old full packages that you have laying
around might be big and worth dropping.

Eric,
You can also free space when you "Compact Repair" all your .mdb Access files under your B7 directory.

Ian,

Depending on your OS, there are numerous ways to quickly gain a few more MB
out of that hard drive...

If you are using NT or Professional:
* Compress your little used directories.
* Reduce the size of your page file (not below 64mb - usually keep it bigger
than your available RAM.)
* Disable hibernate - and allow the system to remove the hibernate disk
space(this will be equal to your page file)
* If you have the NT or Professional CD - consider removing the I386
directory (be cautious, some of your proprietary drivers might be lurking
within). This is an Installation/Update set of folders.

If you are like me... when on the road... you are gonna hate this last
section of advice. Uninstall the games. I know, you'll hate that -
especially when you want to go back to the room and vent.

I hope this helps!

One thing you can do is to delete your internet cache. If you still need
more space, consider going into your Temporary Internet Files folder and
manually deleting the content and ALL SUBFOLDERS since they will still be
using alot of space, but won't report it if you look at the properties. The
structure here is strange, but you won't get all your space freed up unless
you delete all the subfolders. I've seen gains of well over 200MB with this.
You'll lose your cookies (toss your cookies?) but it's worth the extra
space.

Hi All,

Thanks for the suggestions.

Regarding the question as to what to delete to free up space on my Xe laptop with three environments on it...

I deleted the py7333 folder under b7 and freed up about 1.4 GB, so now I'm good to go. I just didn't want to do that without checking out the implications first. Seems there aren't really any implications other than I no longer have the Prototype Environment installed on my machine.

Thanks for the piece of mind.

Ian
