upgrade to iSeries

We are planning to upgrade the our system to iSeries Model 820 from Model
720. The OS will remain at V4R5. I understand that Upgrade to New iSeries
(AS/400) Model requires updated X0001M. Is this required even for V4R5? Any
other issues / pitfalls regarding the upgrade...

The upgrade of X0001M is due to changing serial numbers on the i-series, not due to the OS version upgrade. For World there are no other real issues.

So then can the assumption be made that if you are upgrading via IBM upgrade
path and the serial number on the machine does not change this is not an
issue?

i'm not sure about everything that the JDE license code is based on, but it isn't based on the operating system level.
