Turning Off Auto Complete!

Is there a way to turn off auto complete in general? How about for specific objects? I am refering to auto complete as when a user types 'L' and the last word typed that started with 'L' fills the edit field.

In any interactive application (P...) select the menu Preferences and disable the option Type Ahead.
