Hello old friends! :)

Of course you don't remember me... I changed my name out of pure shame.

First let me say that I dont't expect any detailed technical info here (unless you wanto to) but more some pointer and highlights on what to foccus my efforts to get up to date again.

I have had severall years experience in Oneworld Xe development... then went to the dark side and moved to SAP for about 3 years. But now I'm all better and ready to be one of the good guys again... only I'm told I should expect to work with 8.12 version.
And that's is my question (finally):

What main differences should I expect from Xe to 8.12 development? I am already verifying net change documentation and etc., but there's no substitute for hands on experience and knowlege, and JDElisters are invaluable on that matter.

So, please, I would appreciate very much any comments, tips, hints on the subject.

Oh, yeah... I'm just so glad to be back

It's almost embarassing.

Thank you!!!

Hi,

Most important differences (from a development point
of view) would be :

1. FAT client is gone, at least for regular user. It's only
used for CNC administration (and development too).
2. Unicode (it's relevant if you develop C BSFN, otherwise
its manipulation is hidden by JDE Toolkit and middle-ware)
3. Power forms : extra grid gadgets

Hi, Sebastian! Thank you!

So, there's not really a lot of changes regarding development, right?
I mean, there's some tweaking on the BSFNs and I've read about some behavior modifications in grids and ER system functions, but the main game is the same. At least that's my first impression.

Thank you for your reply!

Anyone else has any other thoughts to share?

In general, I think form development is a little easier in the later versions. I went from 8.11 to Xe, and it took some time trying to find my way around the nooks and crannys of FDA on the older tools release. Once you can get past working with the web layer, I think you'll find the devlopment environment is much the same across versions, but improved.

Hi,

I'm far from being a "black-belt JDE developer", but
so far, I haven't found major differences between
Xe programming and E812 programming.

I don't code native C BSFN, so I didn't have to deal
with CHAR to JCHAR conversions, 8 bits/16 bits
characters, etc... That's done behind the curtains by
OMW toolkit. If you code native C BSFN, well... reserve
a few hours to get familiar with Unicode, JCHARs, etc.

The most difficult change (to me) was dropping FAT client
and going pure-Web, some APPLs that look nice in FAT
look horrible in Web client and vice versa, you have to
adapt your screen design skills to the new environment.

Wait until you have to adjust again for the coming new Flash Client! Sorry, couldn't resist ;-)

Cool!
Thank you for your feedback, guys! I was afraid of something horribly different, but looks like I'll be ok.
