Termal Server vs. Fat Client Functionality

Hello list!

With aproximately 95% of our 1000 user base existing across a WAN, I need
to understand what limitations Terminal Server with Citrix presents over a
Fat Client.
I am 100% clear on why we need to run Terminal Server to connect the
remotes, I just
need to understand what they WILL and WON'T be able to do.
How is the functionality any different, specifically, and what is the true
impact of the functional differences.
Are there any limitations anyone would deem critical??

Thanks in advance!

Ryan,

If you ask JDE what you can't do it basically says that you can't do
development. This doesn't sound to bad.

In reality what JDE defines as 'development' can cause you a bit of grief.
Basically you can't do anything that affects the specs since they are
shared. This includes creating/copying batch versions. If you are trying
to run pilots/CRP's over the WAN this will become a HUGE issue. The users
will require this functionality. There are bad ways to implement the users
creating/sharing versions over the WAN, and worse ways. I have not yet
found a good way.

The other 'development' tool which is a pain not to have is UTB. Your IS
people that need to connect will have to find alternate ways to access the
'raw' data.

We have had success with UTB in the Terminal Server environment. No issues,

Michelle,

How did you allow users to access UTB on WTS? I get the message
that UTB is a development tool and do not try this again! Is there a switch you
set in the INI?

So....Michelle,
How/what did you have to do in order to use UTB on WTS???? Edwards
told us that this just flat out couldn't be done. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Create a NT local OWDeveloper group on your TSE, put your user NT accounts

Here are the things that you can't do with WTS that
you can do with a Fat Client

Can't use Universal Table Browser on TSE
Can't do any development on TSE
Can't use Report Writer on TSE (Till XE I have been
told)
Can't use Object Librarian on TSE
Using external e-mail with workflow will not work
correctly. (The short cut that is sent in the e-mail
message will only work on Fat clients.)

A good place to look is in the knowledge garden. On
the main menu choose Products, Knowledge, Knowledge
Browser. From that screen Choose the OneWorld,
Terminal Server edition

Hopefully there are others that can fill in what I
missed.

Yes, that is exactly what we did. You can also do remote development on a
terminal server if it is a dedicated box. I know that sounds extreme,
however, the cost in comparison to travel expenses can be a wash.

Re: FW: Termal Server vs. Fat Client Functionality

My bad!

Thanks for the info, I meant to say RDA not Report
writer.

I belive I have been brainwashed by the JDE reps with
the use of the word "Can't". What I should have said
was "We were told by JDE that...".

But Like I always here on this list, even if JDE says
it can't be done doesn't mean it won't work.

Feel free to correct me when ever possible.

Chad

I think someone else posted already but just in case:

Create a NT local OWDeveloper group on your terminal server, put your user
NT accounts
into that group and they will be able to access UTB.

Re: RE: Termal Server vs. Fat Client Functionality

What do you mean by Printing ?

What is different from printing compared to Fat Clients ?

I can use ANY type of printing - whether networked or local ports - using Citrix correctly. There is NO difference with printing. Please explain this note a little further cos I get grief directly coming back to me when people are UNCLEAR about their answers like this.

Its not as if I introduced Citrix to OneWorld eh....

Re: RE: Termal Server vs. Fat Client Functionality

Depending how important development is to the remote sites you can also add Remotely Possible (or some similar package) to the TSE and then log into a "local" fat client to do be able to accomplish this. We do so and find our response time is surprisingly good.
