SQL 2000 Trans log backups are killing my ES

Subject says it all. SQL server is running Tlog backups every half hour on 13 databases and when they run, the system grinds along for about 5 minutes with DB timeouts and the like. Can see that the SQL server is using 50% of CPU when the backups are running. However, the Tlogs themselves are less than 100K per database. Has anyone seen this before? We have tried resetting SQL priority, but it makes no difference

Thanks
