RES: What comes first? SP or Update?

Jeremey,
I would question that as well. As far as I know an update may(!) depend on a
minimum SP-level, but not vice versa.
If you install both at the same time (one right after the other) it should
not matter at all. Still, I would install SP20 on the DS first and then
Update6.

My two centavos.
Gerd

Assunto: What comes first? SP or Update?

Ok, I hope this garners lots of responses. It may cause some heavy
discussion, but we really need your opinion.

We will be doing some major work in the month of October, First we are
upgrading our AS/400 to v4r5. Then we need to apply SP 20, and Update 6.
But therein lies the problem. We've been told that the Update needs to be
applied first. We don't understand why, so we are looking for your opinions
and the reasoning behind them. Will you please assist us?

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, there might be an ESU to be installed before installing SP20 but that is not Update 6. It has to do with Table conversions if i remember correctly.

We have installed SP20 , in multifoundation, and so far it runs fine without update6.

WOW...this is a lot of updates....

This is wnat we were told by JDE when we did our system upgrade.

You do your OS upgrade first....test to make sure that your system is functioning properly.

Then you get all pre. req ESU for your service Pack applied then you apply your SP. (do your testing)

Then you apply all the Pre. req for your Update, do all your special instructions then apply your update (Do your initial testing)

Then apply any ESU's following the Update that you have a need for. Since there are things you may need that is no part of Update 6.

After that you test the life out of your system. Hopefully all goes well for you....don't get strssed :)

Thanks for all the replies! They seem to follow the same thread, SP then
Update. Now comes the question we need to bring to the table for the person
that said update, then SP. Why? But between the wonderful users on the
list, and JDE I'm going to strongly argue the point that the Service Pack
comes first!

As for stressing....well....three major upgrades and running payroll
parallels for a "first check 2003" go-live.....too late, stress is already
building!

Hi Jeremy,

I've been through this a couple of times with different clients. Here's my pennys worth (probably echo most of whats been said already but...)...

Do the OS Upgrade (why are you upgrading to v4r5 rather than v5r1 - just curious?). Make sure you check the JD Edwards requirements for AS/400 (PTF levels/CUM level/Client Access Service Pack levels). Following this, leave the system alone for at least a week to see if you hit any OS upgrade related issues.

Do the SP installation (install the base SP20 and then the latest one off fix straight away - SP20_E1 I believe). If you can do so make it a multifoundation installation.

Install the latest planner ESU followed by Update 6. This can follow straight after the successful installation of the service pack.

Do a full package build.

Its not as scary as it sounds... honest!

v5r1 requires sp18.1 or higher, we are only on sp 14. Just a minor
logistics problem, can't get there from here. We will be looking at
upgrading to v5r1 sometime next year.

Re: What comes first? SP or Update?

We're on V5R1 before we upgraded to SP 18.1. We were on SP 15.1 before the upgrade. We had no problems with SP 15.1 and V5R1. Our CO was on SQL.
