RE: Setting up long leadtime operations in OW Mfg and Product Cos

Hi List again,

Thanks for your input John and Larry.

First, I would like to make clear what I mean by saying that multiple WOs
can not reside in the same WC,
the kiln, John.
As Larry points out in his reply, the tunnel kiln is a large facility that
can heat treat refractories from multiple
OWs at the same time while the refractories from the multiple batches of WOs
pass through the tunnel of
the kiln on rail trailers that carry the refractories. But when you are to
setup the kiln as a WC in the traditional
MRP system, you can not have multiple WOs share the WC at the same time
because the capacity
of the WC is defined as the the sum of processing time available at the WC
and you can not process multiple
items at the same time consuming the WC capacity. So if you have a kiln WC
that has 24 hrs of available
capacity and the processing time of the two WOs are 24 hrs and 48 hrs, when
you follow the logic of traditional
MRP system, you can only have the MRP system schedule one batch of WOs to be
processed at the WC
at the same time and the total work schedule for the two WOs will be 72 hrs,
while, in reality, you can process
multiple WOs at the same time as long as the space and length of the tunnel
kiln allows you to do that.
If you were able to let the system schedule multiple WOs at the same time,
the total scheduled processing
time might be 48 hrs, instead of 72 hrs. If you have any solution for this
kind of situation, please let me know.

Thanks for pointing out the effect of reduced capacity by processing
multiple WOs at the same WC Larry.
As you know, a kiln is a facility that heat treats the refractories while
the refractories from multiple OWs
pass through the facility and the items passing through the facility at the
same time might be of the same
kind or different ones. Combining multiple WOs into one WO might be a good
choice for this case
but this also leaves the issue of how you can deal with the characteristics
of the tunnel kiln process that
the objects of the processing are passing through the facility while they
are being processed. My client is
using two kinds of kilns, i.e., tunnel kilns and shuttle kilns. For the
shuttle kiln, I think your recommendation
will be OK because I can combine multiple OWs into one batch of WO that
utilizes the whole space of the kiln
and might be started at one point of time and I can schedule the next batch
of combined WOs after the end
of the batch processing. What comes up to my mind at this point is that
maybe I can set up the tunnel kiln WC
as a line operation. What's your comment on this idea ?
Do you mean that I can adjust the resource units of the kiln WC to
accommodate enough WOs that the kiln can
process as it does in reality in the second approach you recommended ? If my
understanding is correct, what
is your recommendation to do after the scheduling is done ? Must I change
the schedule to reflect the reality
that the tunnel kiln can process multiple WOs at the same time after I get
the result of the schdule ?

Thanks for sharing experiences and insights and appologies for the lengthy
message to all of the list members.

T.G. Yoon

T.G.,

I misunderstood your problem as being one of a variable amount of time required to bake depending on the number of refractories in the kiln.

Now I understand that the refractories always take the same amount of time to bake (as they pass through the kiln) but the issue is one of capacity.

One thing I am not clear on is you seem to be saying that OneWorld MRP takes capacity into consideration when scheduling. To the best of my knowledge it does not. OneWorld is basically an infinite capacity scheduler per my understanding and you need people (planners) handling scheduling to avoid overloading workcenters too far. So it will schedule multiple W.O.s into the same W.C. if planners don't avoid this by changing request dates.

Maybe I still don't understand the problem - please continue to educate me.

Hello T. G.
What I do with my client is to set up the routing
carefully by items for the sintering process. That is,
the machine run may be 1 hour only although the truly
slin time takes 30 hours.
My practice is since more items can be put in the slin
at the same time, why do not figure out the portion of
the slin capacity toeach item. By avoiding the
scheduling problems, you can try to put extra 29 hours
into the queue/move time in routing to balance the
really leadtime you needed.
Larry is correct, basically you are not suppose to use
the capacity to make schedule correct since it is
finite.
Try access to JDE website to get more message of APS,
their new module to handle the scheduling.

John
