RE: AS/400 upgrade to V4R5

Hi Jude,
I just did this same upgrade 2 weeks ago. I had no problems with the
install. It was a very easy install.
Bring something to read... :)

AS/400 upgrade to V4R5Jude

We are on cum8, and upgraded to V4R5 last December. Virtually no =
problems. Did not see any noticeable performance hit, either. But =
then, we were only on a 730 for a week or so, then upgraded to one of =
the faster new ISeries 830 systems.

One important note: there have been reported incidents of problems with =
some of the newer IBM 10k 8.6gig disk drives. There is a database/DASD =
group PTF which addresses some or all of the problems. I don't know if =
these problems existed under V4R3, but I strongly suggest you get the =
group PTF (which is listed on the as400service.ibm.com site, I believe). =
The latest for V4R5 is MF27053, and I believe it came out just about =
7/31 or 8/1.

I am on World A7.3 cum10, AS/400 720 V4R3. In a week or so I'll =
be upgrading my AS/400 to V4R5. Those of you who experienced what I am =
about to do, please share your good or bad experience with me.

RE: AS/400 upgrade to V4R5

Hi Jude,

We went from V4R4 to V4R5 end of May and had no problems with the install
and none since. All the time we were on V4R4, there were no problems either.
I'll second Tom's suggestion of bringing something read, except for feeding
the AS/400 cd's during the initial load, everything else is pretty much
fully automated.

RE: AS/400 upgrade to V4R5

Hey Stephen,
I know alot of parameters affect this... but can you tell me how long your
upgrade took?
what was your Disk capacity at the time?
I too am upgrading from V4R2 to V4R5 this weekend. Just curious about
estimate of how much time will be involved. I believe IBM's estimate is
from 6 to 18 hours.
Thanks

RE: AS/400 upgrade to V4R5

Hi Jim, I think the actual upgrade only took 4-6 hours. What took the bulk
of the time were the two full backups before the upgrade. One of the backups
was our nightly full *ALLUSR backup, but we still had to do an option 21
when we got in in the morning. When we did the upgrade we had 571 G of disk
with about 310 G used.

It was mentioned already, but just to re-emphasize it; make sure you get the
group PTF for DASD (currently MF27053). There are also group ptfs for
database (SF99105), hiper (SF99096), backup and recovery solutions
(SF99077), etc. Depending on when the latest cume has come out for V4R5
(beginning of August), make sure to get the hiper group PTF (it is updated
weekly).
