Primary location

Hello Lists,
Does anyone has the idea why the components of the WO
always committed to the primary location, though the
quantity of components on secondary locations are
sufficient for the WO.
I have checked the related setup on item B/P, B/P
constant and Mfg. constant and all them seem OK.
Thanks for your advising.
John
PS. BTW, what's the major purpose for setting primary
location on OW ?

John, we have the same issue if a user enters a transaction without creating
a proper F4102 record: when a user enter such transaction OW creates
incorrect record in F4102 (without 2-d and 3-d item code), and commits LOT
information, QOH on primary location. To avoid it you have to be sure that a
proper record in F4102 is created before entering a transaction with
appropriate combination of item code and B/P.

Hi Atayan,
Thanks for the information but do you have specific
idea how the F4102 can be improper?
Regards,
John

John,

The purpose of the primary location is to specify (outside advanced warehousing) the first location to pull product from. The JDE pick process evaluates all locations but looks at the primary location first in all cases, and then continues to fulfill the order from secondary locations. The pick process provides suggestions only. When processing the shipment confirmation, you specify the location from where product was actually picked.

Mike,
Thanks for the explaination. I am asking because I was
told the primary location should be used as the error
proof function and should be kept as blank all the
time.
And this is why I feel not comfortable when WO commits
the components to primary.

John

John,

Here is some more infomation to help clear up the way JDE handles allocations.

There are 2 basic reasons for having a blank primary location attached to an item. One is to insure that users make a conscious choice about entering a location. With so many processing options allowing a default to the primary, it has been my experience that this can lead to frequent inventory errors. If there should never be a quantity in a blank location, then it is quite easy to nightly schedule a version of the stock status report selecting on blank location with quantity not equal to zero. Then lookup the affecting transactions in the Item Ledger to locate the user and do some education to quickly correct the problem. If a primary location is a valid stocking location, it is much more difficult to quickly catch errors.

The other reason is the one that was mentioned about JDE always allocating inventory first to the primary. If lot tracking is not done, then it is difficult to use up inventory in the secondary locations. So if the primary does not have any stock because of the blank location method, then this is not a problem. More confusion is added because of the way soft allocations from sales and work orders display on the Item Summary Availability screen. They always appear in the primary location, although they are not really allocated to that specific location. It just looks like it.

Hope this helps.
