phase out components

I would like to phase out a component in a BOM and phase in a new component. The idea is that MRP checks the inventory of the phase-out component but doesn't plan new requirements. When requirements are higher than the inventory of the 'old' component then MRP should plan an order for the 'new' component.
How can this be achieved?
I was thinking of using stocking type 'U' for the phase-out component and linking the phase-in component to it in the BOM, but MRP still plans requirements on the use-up component.

Unfortunately you are correct that MRP will still plan for the use up
component. The only way I have been able to accomplish this is to create a
BOM for the item you want to use up (Parent) with the replacement part as a
component. I'm assuming the component will be planned in the same manner as
the component it is replacing. When MRP runs, as long as you have inventory
for the parent (use up) it won't call out the component (replacement) as a
requirement. When your planner sees this component requirement they can
notify someone to change the BOM accordingly.

Couldn't you just change the "Order Policy" and "Planning Code" in the Manufacturing values to a "0" (zero) and leave your Stocking type at "U" to use up?

This would make it so MRP is not planning that component item. but you are still useing it up. Then when you "Run out" you just add the New component to the BOM.
Of course this will also make it so you dont see any demand for the new Component until after the old component is used up, thus purchasing will have to be informed so that they can order it. We have a "Manual" type forecast just for this issue.

@MBrooks, in this case, what stocking types, etc. are you using for the parent (use up) item?
