OW Not Supported on NT with Oracle 8.1.7

I'm not sure if anyone has any insight into this but here's the situation:

We're on Oracle 8.1.6 and NT 4.0. Oracle stops supporting this in Oct of
2001. When I say stops supporting I mean they will continue to provide
extended warranty support and support for old bugs but not any new bugs that
appear. However, the logical move is to migrate to Oracle 8.1.7 and get full
support.

JDE has certified OneWorld on Oracle 8.1.7 on Intel platforms under the
following conditions
1. Service Pack >14.1
2. Windows 2000 (Yes, notice Windows NT is not supported)

The first issue isn't a problem. We're on SP 13.1 and plan to go to SP 15.X
once the bugs are worked out.
The second issue is a problem. We have about 240 JDE FAT clients, 1
Enterprise server, 1 Deployment server and 2 Terminal servers that run
JDEdwards OneWorld. Migrating to 2000 is not the easiest or cheapest thing.

If anyone is in the same situation as us (I know you're out there by reading
your config in your signature) I'd like to know what you plan to do or what
you've already done.

Have you asked JDE? It is worth asking if they would certify Oracle 8.1.7
for NT. Oracle 8.1.7 is not drastically different to Oracle 8.1.6 so there
is no obvious reason why it should not be certified for NT. Also as I
understand Oracle and the way it works you would only need to upgrade your
Enterprise Server to Windows 2000, it will be the Database platform which is
key not the Clients.

But as I say - ask the question, they may just not have tried it. If they
have and it failed for some reason then press for them to get it fixed, I am
sure there will be many who will add weight to your SAR once it is raised, I
think Windows NT is still the most popular Enterprise Server platform for
OneWorld.

I contacted JDE support and they verified that 8.1.7 will not be supported on NT4.0, however this pertains only for enterprise, deployment or application servers. Any client, fat or thin can still use a version less than 8.1.7

Does anyone know if Oracle 8.1.7 is supported on HP9000 by JDE???? Need
to know this asap as we have a client that is wanting to upgrade.

We have been running 8.1.7 with B7331 for about 2 months and haven't had any
problems. I was told by a CNC person at JDE that to run 8.1.6 you need SP14,
but 8.1.7 runs fine. Not sure about XE though.

We used the migration feature in Oracle to go from 8.1.5 to 8.1.7 and it
worked great. I'd trust an Oracle upgrade long before I'd trust a JDE
service pack.

If you run Oracle 8.1.6 or 8.1.7 on NT you MUST be on SP 14.X or higher. If
you don't believe me run the Budget Worksheet and look for all the missing
sub-totals. This has to do with Oracle not correclty retrieving the number
of pre-fetched rows. JDE supplies a fix for this problem from the
application end in SP's 14.X and higher. This problem is not fixed in Oracle
on NT platforms until Oracle 8.1.7.1 or 8.1.6.3.4.

As for JDE not supporting OW on NT/Oracle 8.1.7 doesn't anyone find it odd
that Oracle supports 8.1.7 on NT but JDE doesn't support OW on NT/Oracle
8.1.7?. The recommended solution of upgrading the OW Servers to 2000 and
Oracle 8.1.7 and leaving the clients at NT and Oracle 8.1.6.3.4 is not
recommended by most DBA's and not even by JDE - check the minimum tech
requirements that suggest that both the clients and server be on the same
version of Oracle.

It's obvious that we'll all have to eventually upgrade to Windows 2000 then
Windows XP, etc. I'm just trying to figure out what other people have
planned before I ask or recommend an upgrade of 240 FAT clients and 4
servers to Windows 2000.

Other than Tim, has anyone else gone to Oracle 8.1.7 or does anyone else
plan to go there in the near future - (remember that Oracle de-supports
8.1.6 this October).
