Hi jdelist,

We are running B7332 service pack 13.1 on an as400 v4r4 enterprise server
with Windows Terminal Server. We have about 200 thin clients and about 45
fat clients.

The AS/400 being used is a model 720 with 2 processors with a client server
CPW of 810 and Interactive of only 35 CPW.

Currently our biggest problem is that we cannot process enough jobs at one
time. As a result there are far too many jobs in one queue. On average
there are around 50 - 80 jobs sitting in our QB7332 queue. We have 5 queues
to keep specific jobs apart.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how we could improve this situation. We
are considering increasing our processors from 2 to 4 but want to be sure
this will help. The idea of increasing the processors is to improve the
speed that the jobs run through at.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance,

Jason Attard

Couldconfigure additonal UBE server(s) to increase the overall processing power/number ofavailable queues. Would have todecide what group(s) of usersshould utilise the additional app server then repoint the DEFAULT UBE OCM entries.

If you decide to go this route, there are otherthings to be considered when setting up additional app servers so if you need to discuss more then email me.

You can assign specific jobs to specific queues by checking out the version
and updating the version details. We created a queue for short running jobs
that was multi-threaded and assigned all short running jobs to this queue.
It took a little time to do the queue assignments but it worked really well
for us.

You also may want to read the AS/400 and OneWorld Tuning guide, the one that
is available on the IBM web-site. This guide specifically states that you
should run 1 less UBE then you have processors, this is only for the AS/400.

You may want to look into running NT servers as Application servers, they
tend to run the UBE much better than the AS/400, and they are cheaper then
adding processors to an AS/400. This is a solution that I have implemented
for one of my clients, and they are very pleased with the
results/performance.

Andy

I have a cheesy jobq mover that I will send you if you are interested.
Beats the heck out of dealing with the version jobq - what a mess.

Basically each UBE takes a full CPU (UBEs just suck CPU). We have a
12-way. This allows us to function. Another option could be setting up
App Servers on NT I suppose... I have visions in my head of not being able
to control the jobs very well on NT (hold them, reroute them, view the open
files, watch the I/O, watch the job log, see the user, etc.) - but I would
still like to give this a try.
