Multiple Production Environments

Platform: Unix, Win NT TSE, Citrix, OneWorld B733.2, going to Xe

Question:

We are currently looking at creating a number of different Production
Environments (about 25) each sharing the Production PathCode. Each
Production Environment will be used by distinctly different companies (hence
they will have their own data like COA, AAI, UDC, etc.), but the aim here is
to ensure that they all share the same code.

Has anyone out there done anything like this, and/or anyone knows of any
limits on the number of environments that OneWorld can support?? I have done
this for 3 Production Environments, and it seems to work just fine.

I am DYING to know the answer to this. We are already doing multiple
production environments on World which share program code (JDFOBJ) but
nothing else. Each environment CANNOT and DOES NOT share UDC's/Data
Dic/AAI/etc. This has been very easy to accomplish in World and we have
been doing this for many years.

We are starting down the XE path and we can't get any good answer to this
question. Apparently the problem has to do with data replication, in
particular the Data Dictionary. I can't believe that JDE isn't listening to
this problem and doing something about it. We (and Ritchie here) can't be
the only companies with multiple (and separate) environments with common
code! AAahhhhhhhh......! (OK, I feel better now.)

Don't worry! OneWorld is highly configurable and you can share (or not)
almost every part of OneWorld between environments, including UDCs, program
code, data dictionary, menus etc. You don't even have to use data
replication at all - we don't.

Is there any particular reason why you need different environments for
different companies? Normally different companies are setup to acheive this
process. I am just curious to know the business reason behind this.

Devi,

These companies I am talking about are not subsidiaries of a bigger company.
They are totally independent companies that have the same business and have
decided to share IT costs by having a single application, managed by a
centralized group. They, per say, do not share any data and have diff COA,
AAI, etc., etc.

My situation is exactly the same as Ritchie. This is why we are REQUIRED to
have separate environments.

Do you have different languages amongst these 25 companies ?

How many Double Byte languages in the mix ?

A single "global" pathcode is perfectly ok with as many languages as one wants - but 2 double byte languages will require you to have 2 pathcodes I believe.

This is completely possible and supported in OneWorld. You may create as many environments, pathcodes, datasources as you like and are willing to support (notice this last bit may be a BIG deal!)

The setup is not that difficult, but the maintenance and upgrades will take some planning. I would strongly recommend doing some planning sessions on these things before you set it all up. You may be able to take some steps to prevent headaches down the road, or at least understand what you are in for. While JDE supports all this customization, they certainly don't make it easy to maintain.

Luckily, there will only be a single language - English. So I am hoping we
only need 1 Pathcode.

Ritchie,
Are you going to apply SARs directly to your PROD pathcode? You
should consider at least 1 additional pathcode for testing of SARs and
such. Just FYI.
