MRP Work Order per Sales Order

Can anyone point me in the direction of attaching a Work Order per a Sales Order when running MRP regeneration. I know the question came up during the Composer phase of our implementation back in April 1999, but we decided not to attach Work Orders per each Sales Order.

If we do accomplish this, what would be the downside?

We are currently at A7.3 Cume 9.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

There is an option in the Line Types to instruct the system to automatically
generate a work order for the specific line type.

Ron,

I used to know this interface real well. Its one of those black holes where
the sales side doesn't know the manufacturing side and vice versa. To
start, use line type W or a line type with the Generate WorkOrder flag set.
This tells the system to create a work order automatically when the sales
order is entered.

Then, assuming you are manufacturing to order, the game is to have the
system know that the order can be shipped when the workorder is completed.
The next part I am a little vauge on, as its been about 8 years since I did
this. When you complete the work order the system will put the completed
item into inventory with the order number as the lot number or the location.
Then you can ship the order. Presumably, when the order was entered it went
to a back order status.

Hope this gets you started at least.

Re: RE: MRP Work Order per Sales Order

I don't know the MRP side, so I don't know how it ties in, but as Andy
states, if you are manufacturing to order, then the sales/shop floor control side does start with using the correct line type when entering the sales order (the flag to generate work orders is way over on the right hand side of the line type setup, so it can be difficult to find if you don't know that it's there).

To let the sales side know what's going on with the work order, set up order activity rules that include the manufacturing steps as sales status codes. I believe that the processing options for work order generation allow you to identify a status that will update the sales order line so that on the sales side you kn

Ron,
I do apologize for not writing earlier so this may be a bit late - to
create a WO per SO you need to use the W line type. This should have
already been set up with default Order Activity rules. You can manually
create this by changing the Line type to W on a standard SO or you can
create a version of Sales Order Entry P4211 that defaults the W line type.
If you call this version of P4211, in your MRP version, you will create a
planned Work Order for each Sales Order.
Drawbacks - 1) the connectivity between the SO and WO is very limited.
Changes made to one do not necessarily reflect in the other
2) you may lose efficiency in manufacturing - if you could
benefit by combining WO quantities and mfg. like items together you won't
have this. It seems to me that it is ideal for made to or engineered to
order only.

Hope this helps.

Lynn

I dont think you need to use a "W" line type. I think you can set any Line type to make a work order if you set it to do so.

Anyway A question. Wont MRP Roll all sales orders for a specific time period up into One order?/Message?

The W line type is already set up, but you could make the S line type or
whichever, act like the W if you want to.
MRP will roll up the demand if you set the order policy rule to be Period
of Supply. Then you can set the period, in days, for the period of time
you want to be included, for example 7 days for a week or 30 days for a
month. It will also "roll" up demand based on Multiple quantities
However, the demand (SO) which is setup to create a WO, actually create the
WO header when the SO is created, so you have the "Supply" at that time.
MRP won't really give you messages for the finished good item, it doesn't
need to, since you've created the WO. It will create messages for lower
level demand created by the WO.
