Migration - from Legacy to XE

List,

I have some applications in pre-XE environments that I would like to move to
XE. These applications are 'client created' applications - thus I am not as
concerned about OW upgrades and enhancements. I do understand that there
are changes to OW in the XE environment that do not exist in previous
releases.

We are not migrating our legacy OW to XE. Rather we are seeking to move
some of the applications, reports, views(that are client created) to XE and
not touch the legacy implementations.

Is there an easy way to move these applications from our legacy environments
to the XE environments? I realize that it is not as easy as a cut and
paste, but I'd expect it to be easier than complete a rewrite. These
applications include Views, UBEs and Applications.... Ideally, if it could
be as easy as check out, check in and test/repair, that is the direction I
would prefer.

If you can, provide direction and pros/cons when available.

Re: [Migration - from Legacy to XE ]

Well, it depends on you existing version level.

If you are B732.x then you cannot transfer the objects directly into the XE
central objects.

If you are B733.x then you do have that ability.

The reason is that between B732 and B733 JDE changed the structure on the
Central Objects tables (removing NN, adding a versions column, etc).

To get B732 objects to XE you first need to run them through conversion
process where they are (this is a JDE term I swear) slimed.
This prepares the objects you identify to be merged into XE by converting them
to the same format. The preparation of these objects is not only in how they
are identified as records in the CO tables, but the content of the binary
fields are also manipulated (e.g. validated against the DD).

Another issue to consider is DD items. Although your objects (TBLEs, BSVW,
APPLs) are custom and will Upgrade without fail, you may have based these
objects on existing DD items. If you have made changes to the properties of
these DD items to suit your custom needs in the current release, you will need
to account for this as well when planning to migrate your objects to XE.

That being said, I would think the prospect of directly transferring objects
between cumulative levels is enough to make a RL staff member double over in
pain.

It seems like what your hunting for is an Object-only upgrade. While not
defined by JDE, it is absolutely attainable by simply removing the portions of
the upgrade in the plan that do not apply to objects.

If I understood a couple of the direct responders... the best path would be
to copy my production legacy environment, run the upgrade to XE then check
out from the legacy XE and into the new environments?

Does this seem the safest way? Or should I recreate the applications?

Hi Daniel,

You do not have to recreate the application. One of the first step is
copying report versions from Production to Crp and to set the Merge flag on
objects. This tells the upgrade process, yes I what to keep this object. I
did an upgrade where the client has several hundred custom objects and all
were upgrades.

Daniel,
You may take a look on the SAR Watch /Xe OneWorld Forum; Jon Steel has his "Transporter ..." productin Beta:

"Due to Jacks post - I have now developed the OneWorld Transporter.
This standalone application now moves objects between any version of OneWorld and any other version (eg B7331 to Xe) any pathcode (eg DEVB733 to PY7333). It also has the ability to take objects, transfer them down to a Microsoft Access DB (a little like Product Packaging) and retrieve them into any other system later on. It is easier to use that Product Packaging - and it does not use Oneworld to transfer the objects (the product is standalone).
The product is in Beta currently - and will solve this thread. It will be available to any JDE OW customer.

Re: RE: Migration - from Legacy to XE

Adrian,

I have just made an upgrade from OW 73.2.2 to Xe. It worked more or less fine. The less is that custom changes have not been added at the end as remarked lines in JDE applications and reports. I set the merge flag TO C/1 and system code to 55. Does anybody has any hints what could have gone wrong?
Thanks.
