You really need to sit with IBM and discuss the LPAR. It creates a complete
separate system on your AS400. It has it's own operating system, console,
CD Rom, it CAN use the same tape drive but you'd have to set it up a certain
way, you have to allocate a certain amount of disk for it (we have to
allocate a whole can of disk) and memory... you might also want Service
Director to work in that partition so you would need an ECS line set up...
it all depends upon your configuration. You need to get either IBM or your
VAR or both involved. As far as OW you would have to restore over the
libraries you need, and change your mappings--do the whole set up... you
could also use another deployment server, or you could partition off the one
you have depending on what you plan to do... there are a lot of options. It
is definitely safe for OW but would have to be very well planned out. There
are quite a few people using LPARs according to IBM and this list. I plan
on upgrading to V5R1 first as it gives a lot of options that previous
releases didn't give. It definitely is not a small task.
