File/Field Definitions

Does anyone know how to get a printed copy of a database file and the text
description of all the fields in that file? I would like to get a printout
of the F4211 file fields and descriptions.

Try doing a DSFFD F4211. That will give you all of the information that you
need, and then some!

You can use the IBM command Display File Field Description,
DSPFFD FILE(F4211) OUTPUT(*PRINT). Prompt the command using F4 to see other
parameters you can utilize.

I run a DREAM Writer using the P98DDSP form. This report has options to
display a full description of each field in a file, or the description
could be bypassed. I have run this report on the F4211, F42119, etc. and it
has come in quite handy.

That would be option 9 on menu G91 or form P98DDSP through the dream writer
versions list.

The best way to get such a listing is through a file utility. If your
AS/400 does not have one, go to www.wrkdbf.com and you can download a very
good utility for free. No, I'm not kidding. It's free. If you should
decide to download and use the WRKDBF utility, display the file first, press
F14 to display a window with the file fields and then F21 to print the
window. Hope that helps.

Thanks to all of your for your help. I was not aware I had so many
different options to do this.

The JDE option will give you any vocabulary overrides as well, which the
AS400 DSPFDD will not do.
This is very helpful when looking for definitions of user defined fields in
a file.

Michael,

I have a "home-grown" utility that written a number of years ago by someone
else that I use all the time. It's call FFD (File Field Description) that
does an on-line display and by using a print key will give a printed
version. Give a day or so and I'll package it up for you.

If you have DBU utility, you can just simply dbu F4211. Press F4 to display the
field descriptions and F7 to print it.
