Excel download

We use Rumba file transfer (V5.2) which will download to Excel V4 and we have Client Access which will download to Excel V5. Is there any file transfer which will download to a later version of Excel - ie one with more than 16k rows?

Thanks

Rumba 6.0 (plus about 6 PTFs) will transfer an unlimited number of records
to excel (if you uncheck the "Limit MS Excel records).

I've been really curious about this as well. We're using Showcase Query
4.1, which also can only download to Excel 4.0 files. We usually download
to a text file if it's very big, but I'd also like to know if there's
anything that can download to Excel 97 or 2000.

Neil,

A few options come to mind. First is if you have Showcase Strategy which is
capable of creating Excel spreadsheets with more than 16k rows.

The other option is to use MS Access with a Client Access ODBC connection to
link to the AS400 table. You can then export the data to Excel

Another option is to create a CSV file (no limit there to the number of
rows/records I believe) that Excel can use.

Instead of doing a "File Transfer" do a direct ODBC connection from within
Excel.

Click Data .. Get External Data .. New Database Query

You will then be prompted to select a Data Source.

Your I.S. Dept should set this part up.
The data source should be set up ahead of time and only needs to be done
once.
In Your Control Panel ... ODBC Data sources .. System DSN .. Add .. Rumba
AS/400 Optimized Server 32bit.. Data source name is anything Default Lib is
the Lib on your AS/400 you want access to. Click the Host tab and make sure
you select a Connection type of READ ONLY. On the language tab Sort based
on Language ID.

Back to the excel you see the above named data source and then when you
select it you will get access to every File in that Lib. Microsoft Query
will come you. Add the "Table" (file) and make whatever SQL statement you
want against it.

Feel free to e-mail me directly with questions.

We are using IBM Client Access to download to Excel with no problem. The limit is 65536 rows in Excel, unless you download into a csv or txt file. If we are exporting to MS Access we use an intermediate csv format to ensure we get more records than 65536.

Steve.

Re: RE: Excel download

I download into Excel 97 (and 2000) all the time. Done a variety of ways: via Showcase Strategy (vers 3.5) directly into Excel, download a file from the 400 (via C/A File Transfer) as a Text or CSV file then import into Excel (any version), and also use the "Transfer Data from an AS/400" Add-in Tool in Excel to do the Client Access tranfer directly into Excel (again, any version). I've never had a problem and I'm sure I've had over 16k rows at some point in the past.

( BTW-if anyone is not aware of how to add the Client Access Transfer Add-in Tool to their Excel choices, I can post the steps or email me directly. )

Re: RE: Excel download

We use a product called Compleo from Symtrax at www.symtrax.com. We have downloaded about 3000 pages of Fixed Asset reports into Excel using this product without any problems.

Steven

The version of CA thet we use (4.5 I think)only exports to Excel V5. The row limit in Excel was not increased until V8 (Excel 97). What version of Clent Access are you using?

Thanks

Re: RE: Excel download

Scott,
I'm new to JDE and Yr-end. We're A7.3 and V4R5 with
latest service pak on CAX. When I export to a CSV from
a file to my desktop, open Excel and see Hex chars only.
What am I doing wrong. ASCII = .CSV(Text) ?
I also only have QGPL, JDFOBJ, and JDFDATA libs available
from my host...
Thank you in advance.

Re: RE: Excel download

The hex characters may be becasue you need to check TRANSLATE CCSI D65536 on the file transfer properties. Give that a try.

RE: RE: Excel download

John,

On the transfer screen, choose FILE, PROPERTIES, and then check the box that
says Convert CCSID.

Re: RE: Excel download

Found it. Am most grateful. That took care of it.

We are on A7.3 CUM8
To download to Excel more than 16, 000 rows, then get the latest Client Access Express version V5 R1 install it and the install Service Level patch S105361. This works great for Office XP, 2000, etc. If you have a maintenance agreement with IBM, then Order the CD V5R1 with latest SP.

I know you got a lot of replies, but you also might try using Rumba and creating a "CSV" file. EXCEL opens this and you should be able to get more than 16K.

Hi Neil
Not sure what sort of things you are doing withJDE and Excel but yiu may be interested in taking a look at a tool called EASYREPORTING. You can find info on our website or emial me and I can send some info to you.
