Depreciation to a subledger

Hmm, well I must admit that I have not tried something like this before. We
use subledger numbers here at White-Rodgers in Fixed Assets, but we use the
subledger type 'E' (equipment number), which I suspect most people will do.
I can tell you this. You can do a journal entry and book an asset's cost
amount to an 'A' (address book) subledger type, with the subledger number
being a valid number in the F0101 (address book file). Once you post that
journal entry to fixed assets, then you have a record in the F1202 file to
an address book type subledger number. Once the cost record is in the
F1202, then the depreciation program should book any depreciation to that
subledger/subledger type (have not actually done that myself).
The key to doing this is getting the asset cost amount booked to that
subledger number.
Hope this helps some.

I like your thinking behind this. But what happens when the cost is posted
directly from the G/L to the fixed asset? It doesn't go through a JE, and I
don't see how it would hit the address book. I would think there would have
to be a way of setting an asset to default to an address book.

Thanks,
Jarrod

Jarrod,
Not sure what you mean by cost being posted directly from the G/L to
the Fixed Asset. Whether you are charging a cost through purchase orders or
through accounts payable vouchers, you should have the ability to enter the
subledger and subledger type, along with the other account information
(business unit, object, subsidiary). So when the cost flows through the
general ledger and eventually hits fixed assets (F1202), it should create
the F1202 record to that subledger number and type. No matter how an asset
cost is getting processed, you should have the ability to assign that cost
to the subledger/type. There is nothing in the F1201 (item master) that
will assign an asset to a subledger number/type.

I have never been able to figure out how to perform depreciation
calculations using a subledger, in my case a Work Order. Interestly enough
though on page 4-33 of JDE's FA manual the example of the Depreciation
Journal Report P12850 has a Work Order referenced (00001901 W). I even
asked JDE Customer Support about it during our Fixed Asset implementation
in 1999, and they had no idea.

John,
After posting an A/P voucher, we still need to post the G/L to the fixed
assets, which allows us to specify an item number (which was already
specified at the time the purchase order was entered). I'm thinking you mean
that I could specify somewhere in those fields for the expense to go to the
subledger (to an individual, in my case, such as a user in a certain
business unit). If that's the case, that sounds like one remedy to the
situation. Of course, that's a work-around, as our logic is that each
specific asset will only be assigned to one subledger, and would ideally be
specified at the time of entering the initial fixed asset (instead of
changing it for each posting from G/L to F/A).

What Paul has described below sounds quite similar to what I am trying to
do, with the individual taking the place of the work order. Has anyone else
had specific experience with this?

Thanks,
Jarrod

Jarrod,
I understand. Would be nice if the F1201 record had a subledger
number/type in there to drive the process.
On posting cost to an asset, I was thinking more along the line of
putting the subledger in along with the asset ID at point of original entry
(such as voucher entry). Once that is posted to G/L, then, yes, you run the
post G/L to fixed assets, getting the cost into the F1202 file. I would not
want to be waiting until the post G/L to fixed assets to put in the
subledger number. Hope that makes some sense.
