Central Objects on AS/400

Hello List,=20
Could anyone share some information regarding the Central Objects on =
AS/400. The manual says it is advisable to have the central objects on =
the deployment box on Oracle or SQL. My question is , in the case where =
the central objects are on the AS400, what role does the deployment =
server play?. How similar is it to having the Enterprise and Deployment =
on the same box?.
I have read in some messages on the KG that it takes about 3 days to =
build a package and it still ends up in error.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

We are running Central Objects on our AS/400 830 box, using the INS card for
the deployment server. We are new to JDE (first go-live in a couple of
weeks), so I really don't know any other configuration well. Perhaps some
more seasoned JDE people can discuss the differences between CO on the
AS/400 or not. We installed Update 2 little over a week ago, and the full
package builds take 12 hours for us. Performance seems ok for package
builds/deployment.

If the central objects are on the AS400 the role that the Deployment Server will be for licensing and for service packs and upgrades. Also putting central objects on the AS400 is a performance hit.

We were able to build a full production package this past wked in approx 16
hours. It was 9 hours on the NT deployment server and 7 hours on the AS400
S20. Deployment server is where the pristine objects are. No user has
access to it. Central objects are stored on the '400.

Hi,
for older versions os the AS/400 you could not store Central Objects in the DB2 database due to the data type LONG RAW (BLOB). I believe from V4R4 on it was technically possible. Please check the KG or your local JDE suport on that. The Deployment Server was always sugested as an alternative place to put C.O.. Theoretically you could install C.O.in any Oracle or SQL database in your local network (if you can´t have them in DB2).

If I can store ALL my tables, including Central Objects, in one single database I would always do that. Otherwise I would have to administer two diiferent databases.
Package builds should not take 3 days, much less end in errors. If that happens something is very wrong and should be fixed.
The Deployment server is needed for instalation, upgrades, ESU installs, package installs and development. It´s function is largly (not entirely) that of a file server.

Having C.O. on the deployment server is by far not the same as having Deployment and Enterprise servers on the same box (which is possible only for NT E.S. and should be considered only in LAB enviroments where performance is not a issue). You would need a much bigger D.S. box when you have a database on it.

Hope this helped, Gerd

AW: Central Objects on AS/400

Hi AS400Guru,

there is an overview document tpdk0009.doc in the KG which tells you all
about OneWorld Change Management. This document lists and describes all
Central Objects that reside on the server (AS/400). If you take a closer
look at the COs you will miss some important Object Librarian objects: these
are BSFN, NER, table headers (C-code). Those objects are saved in the
pathcodes on the deployment server. Whenever a developer checks out a
business function, he or she checks it out from the deployment server. Vice
versa if you check out a report or interactive application, ... this object
is checked out from the CO tables on the AS/400 via TAM. Got it?

I do not know what happens if you move the CO to a SQL database on a NT/W2k
machine. I would expect that the client package build is much faster, but
the time of the server package build will decrease. Does anybody have
expierience with moving CO from the AS/400 to SQL database or vice versa
regarding package build.

In the case of CO on AS/400:
A client package build on a two processor machine should not take longer
than 6-7 hours. A server package build highly depends on the number of
processors you have in your AS/400 and your package build setup on the
AS/400. If you have enough processors you can build a lot of server programs
parallel. If you have 8 processors it should not take longer than 1 hour on
an IBM model 830 or 6-7 hours on a two processor machine on an IBM model
720.
Also important is the throughput of your network and ODBC configuration and
the OS and PTF level.

regards,

Thomas Schwaack

We have had Central Objects on the AS/400 for over a year with no issues.
Our Deployment server is on an INS card in the 400 that had performance
issues of it's own.

I only have a single processor and can build a Client/Server in about 14
hours.

Set up like this, all the Dep server is for is Pathcode storage and ESU
application.

We are pretty much the same as Jeremy re build times. My last one took 6.5
hours on the NT deployment server and 9 hours on the AS400.
