AS400 S30 No CPU Upgrade Available

Hi everyone (espicially if you have an AS400),

We are a coexistance site with a single CPU S30 2257 AS400. We wanted to
upgrade this AS400 and add an extra CPU as our OW load is coming on but we
got told that CPU upgrades aren't available for an S30 anymore. IBM don't
supply them as the marketing life of the machine is over. A 7xx or 8xx
model was recommended.

Has anyone else had this happen with an AS400. This box was bought in 1998
and was top of the line then. It's really a big surprise to know that a box
replacement is necessary. Is this normal?

thanks for any thoughts,

Lerwick :-(

You might try a 3rd party but that is the only place left that i know of,
Pace Butler is a good supplier. The 800 series is where we will go next we
on a maxed out 600 series. IBM was offering some great upgrade deals but I
think it ended on March 1. VARs always run cheaper than IBM anyway. Talk
to JDE rep they can turn you on to a business partner you get better deals
there because of the bulk buying they do they get better prices.

Hi
Bummer. Try someone like Computer Merchants in Aus. I dont know if they do
CPUs but you may be able to get a cheap upgrade.

Cheers
Kieran

Thanks for all the really great suggestions people have come back with
with our S30 upgrade problem.

I had the following ideas put to me through the list and off-line -

Check the hardware withdrawal announcements on the ibm site.
Consider leasing rather than buying to protect against obsolescence.
Try more RAM rather than more CPUs.
Try and get a good deal from IBM for an upgrade!!
Look for a third party for the upgrade.

These are all really good ideas and I will put them in a stewing pot and
see what comes out. I recommend to anyone with an AS400 to monitor the
hardware withdrawal announcements - you may get a nasty surprise if you
ignore them.

regards,
Lerwick

Hi Lerwick

IBM unfortunately do that, they decide to discontinue a range because it is too expensive for them to keep maintaining prior ranges (pity the poor clients who have to lay out another few hundred thousand $'s to buy a new one).

Regarding the S-range, they had apparenlty decided to discontinue the range at the end of March, but have extended that date to around the end of April. The only positive of this is that before the expiration date, they give ridiculous discounts to clients to upgrade to more modern ranges (7xx or 8xx). I suggest you start shouting at IBM, as you may be surprised at how relativelly cheaply you can upgrade you S30 to an 8xx.
