We are AS/400 coexistant with approx. 80 users. We are using S20. We are thinking about moving to a more powerful AS/400 next year.

We run up to 30 concurrent users + world users on a S20 1gb Memory and it
gets hammered. We need a bigger one even with an application server about
to go in

We had 30 users on an S20.

We have now switched to Compaq/NT/SQL7 and saved ourselves $$$ as well as gaining superior performance and simpler administration.
Anyone want to buy an S20/512k/60Gb?

i would agree with tony, OW doesnt seem to have been coded for the 400. We
have performance problems on most of our as/400 sites, relating to batch
processing in particular. if you need to have the as400 in the equation,
use it as a data-server, and buy a cheap intel box to do the processing (and
package builds)

We are on AS/400. I'm wondering how stable is NT? How many times do you have to reboot the server a week? Are all of your users on LAN or WAN? Because DB2 is a part of AS/400, did you end up paying extra for SQL licensing fees?

Re: RE: AS400 and One World

Here is the problem. The AS/400 was designed to be a closed system and for RPG. That's great for World. OneWorld is a client-server (also implies open system) system. Technically speaking AS/400 was not built for client server world. JDE didn't want to isolate any of their World customers (lots of them) so they decided to have as an option that OW would run on AS/400. My understanding is that IBM in recent years have modified AS/400 to be more client server like. For instance as of B7332, Central Objects can reside on AS/400. (I recommend that Central Objects remain on deployment server for performance reasons. However it must have the latest virus checker. I heard of one site where the deployment server went down because of virus. However they continued to operated because their Central Objects were on AS/400.)

In terms of stability and ease of use (commands and prompting feature), the AS/400 can't be beat.

Catherine :

I boot my servers one or two times a year.
NT/SQL is very stable on my installations, but I also would like
to remind you that 95% of my problems on my OneWorld installations come
from OneWorld itself, not from the Operating System or the DBMS.
Don't blame Windows if OEXPLORE.EXE violates memory or generates
"unstable" events, or if some UBEs don't run as expected. These problems
are due to JDE design flaws, not from Microsoft/IBM/HP/Sun.
My users are both WAN and LAN; and you have to pay licenses for both
NT and SQL.
Nevertheless, on small installations (up to 60 users) NT/SQL is
much cheaper than DB2/400 (I know that it's not as solid as IBM OS/DBMS
are...) but its cost/benefit ratio is simply excellent. I have a couple
of customers with 150 users and they behave much better than expected.
Of course, don't try to run your OneWorld on top of NT/SQL when your
shop has 300 users, in that case I would choose AS/400+DB2/400
or Unix+Oracle.

Re: RE: AS400 and One World

I'm surprise that you only boot your server once or twice a year. We have to boot our deployment server once a week because we have 2-3 times where we ended up booting the deployment server during the day.

Catherine :

A few tips :

a) Check your hardware. First of all : RAM; Second : Processor and its
cooler; Third : Power supply (voltage, ground, ripples).
b) Are you using at least 256 MB of RAM?
c) Are you on NT Server English SP6a, Visual C 6.0 SP3 English, MDAC 2.5?
