AS/400 Drops IP Connections - Ideas

List, I realize this is a hardware/OS question... but, perhaps one of you
can assist.

Recently our AS/400 has been resetting Ethernet ports. Our users will be
working away... and suddenly they will get a message stating there was a
disconnect with the database - followed, shortly, by a JDE Database
username/password screen.

If the user tries to ping the server during these moments, there is no
reply. Within a few more seconds the 400 resets the port and they are off
and going again..

Yes, IBM is on the ball, and we have Edwardz looking at it, too... But! -
one of you may have already resolved the issue at your site?

We have several LPARs - Dev, Prod and Admin - and all Ethernet ports will
reset at the same time.

Ideas? Oh, and let's not leave this as an AS/400 Issue... <grin>

Daniel :

You said that you can't ping the server... sounds like a connectivity
problem
If you can't ping neither by name nor by IP, then you have a hardware
(router, NIC card, switch, cables) problem.
If you can ping by IP but not by name, then you have a name resolution
problem (DNS/WINS).

Dan,

I was getting that screen a lot. But I was getting it as they tried to sign
on. The network guys won't give me administration rights (hehe)--just wait
till they want full rights on my AS400--haha... I had them change the
registries in the 2000 machines per the documents I got out of the KG (by
searching on 2000). Then I reinstalled the packages (i had these on the
developer fat client machines) and all seems to be well. I still haven't
been able to get all workstations changed yet but hope to by tomorrow. But,
I am a new install.

Yours sounds much odder than my problem though... good luck! Let us know
if someone solves your problem with an off-line email please.

Sebastian and others...

Our AS400 guy and IBM agree that it is all NICs on the 400 that are
resetting... randomly.

I could, indeed, be that some other device is causing some sort of
time-out... but shouldn't the 400 logs report that type of issue?

The reason I cannot Ping - is not a connectivity issue. The network to the
400 is available - I can ping adjacent boxes on the same switch(s).

DHCP is enabled for client workstations, the server - I believe - has a
static address.

I have gotten a ton of good suggestions - but many of them have been sent
directly to me, circumventing the list. Could respondents please respond to
the list... this way we are all in the loop.

Thanks for the great help!

Hi, Daniel,
We had the same trouble recently. AS/400 worked, but lost all connections.
It didn't respond to ping. We applied ptf. Sorry, I don't know the number,
but if you check the web-site, I am sure you will find.
Hope it helps.

Re: RE: AS/400 Drops IP Connections - Ideas

What AS/400 model do you have and what OS level are you at?

Thanks.
