Hi,

Has anybody migrated from to Xe using different Deployment or Enterprises Servers instead of Prod Servers.

Are you intending to migrate from a small Enterprise running a previous
release of OW to a
larger Enterprise running Xe?

Yes we have.....and it hurt a little.....but it is possible.....you need to
really plan it out carefully........what kind of details can we help with....we
are NT Oracle ....

I have on two times.

1. Used 2 Different ES & DS Names: OOOUUUUUCCCHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
2. Used Same ES & DS Names: Worked very nicely. Has to be done while DS
server #1 is down. ES #2 has to use other IP but same host name.


A lot of this depends on whether you are doing data-only upgrade or typical
upgrade. If data-only upgrade, you could probably get away with #1 above.

We are in the process of doing this now. When we go live with XE we will
have new enterprise, application and deployment servers.

Site Specifications
OneWorld: B732.1 SP12.2 Moving to: XE
Database: Oracle 8.0.5 Oracle 8i
OS: NT4.0 SP5
W2000

Hello Andreu

It is absolutely possible to upgrade your current version of OneWorld to Xe using a "sandbox" environment. However, it does require some very indepth planning and consideration - let alone a lot of hard drive space both on the Deployment Server and the Enterprise Server.

You need to "copy" your existing environment as closely as possible from your original servers to the new servers. This is a combination of backup/restore of the database as well as NT copies of all that deployment server code. You will certainly have to spend a day or so ensuring the "copied" environment will work as if it were a real environment.

Careful of all modifications. Remember to correctly check in the modifications you want to take over and understand where the source and destination pathcodes are going. For a large company in Florida with 820 modifications - this took a week of very hard analysis.

Thats one major rule. Over analyze - if theres any doubt of whats going on, then you're going to have some very late nights and lots and lots of work.

Ensure the upgrade team understands the current business requirements as well as all of the technical complexities. Don't dare start an upgrade without these people totally understanding all of the intricacies - if possible use an expert who's done it before !

Throughout the upgrade, don't worry too much about the business data. Your primary goal is to get modifications and objects running under Xe. The data is actually not too much of an issue with the correct analysis - in my previous example, we designed a 1 minute upgrade process (ie - maximum impact on the users = 1 minute) - however the upgrade itself can take weeks.

Different datasources from normal are a pain in the butt. All those customers that have dozens of Production Database Datasources are going to enjoy (not) their upgrade process. The more database datasources - the longer the upgrade process. This also counts for pathcodes that need to be taken over.

I hope that helps. I'm certainly not going to release all my little secrets on JDEList for upgrades since it is after all my business - but please ensure that you plan well and plan seriously for the upgrade. You'll pay for it later otherwise.

This was very useful. Just a question on the sandbox. Is it separate from
the network?

Can you use another server that is still on the network - i.e. have two
verions of JDE running on the network - with different IP addresses. I
imagine you can, but that the network naming resolution could be tricky?

Our site specifications are :

Oneworld 7.3.2.2 , NT and Oracle DB (80 concurrent users, 3 Terminal Servers), Enterprise (4 CPU 550 MHZ,2 Gbytes, 22 disks between 9 and 18 Gbytes in Raid 0 and Raid 1)

We are now planning the Upgrade process to Oneworld XE and thinking in buy another Enterprise in order to facilitate the Upgrade (and perhaps after the upgrade use it like a Cluster).

I agree any information.

Yes...you'd just use different IP ports for the two separate systems on
the same network. If your current system uses 6005, you could make the
second use 6007. The actual IP addressed of the machine's themselves
should not be a issue. Of course, there's always the issue of "Will JDE
allow me to run a second system or will they require me to pay extra?"

Sorry this has taken so long to reply.

Not sure what you mean by the first part of the question - if you mean is it possible to run a sandbox parallel with the existing version of OneWorld on the same network - then of course. The only tricky part is having a servername different from the first server. There are lots of ways to achieve this however in setup.
