AdHoc Reporting

Was wondering how other companies were handling the creation of adhoc reports. With OMW, JDE states that all development should occur in DV and then be promoted through the environments. Was wondering if anyone is allowing users to develope reports outside of the development cycle, directly in PD. How do you handle keeping the environments in sync so that objects are not lost. What other options do people recommend.

Hi Mel,

my often voiced opinion on this subject is that end-users should NOT use the OneWorld RDA tool - rather a third-party report writer tool should be used. We by-pass all kinds of issues and problems this way, not the least of which is the fact that RDA is a poor report writing tool to hand to a non-programmer. Also the complexities and disciplines of OMW would freak some of our report writing users if we made them go through its cycle.

By the way, we use Crystal Reports for end-user report writing.

Regards,

We have very few users using Report Design Aid. Is too hard for most people.
We have some users using ACL data analysis software ( acl.com ), which is
easy to learn and use. We looked at Crystal Reports and chose ACL instead. I
have views in ACL joining 7 tables (from purchase order to check) which our
I.T. folks say is impossible with JDE RDA. You might also look at IDEA from
CaseWare-IDEA.com, another data analysis package.\

We allow the creation of reports in PD. If you make your users go through
the advancement process, you would either have to have someone else advance
their projects which could be a problem if you needed something in PD right
away. But if you let them advance their own projects, that wouldn't stop
them from advancing something else into PD, like an untested application or
table update. Our report writers (that know how to create update reports)
have to promise not to create one in PD. Nothing like technologically based
security!
