VSMerge Crashes

I am trying to move some ER from a legacy implementation over to XE.

Occasionally, I come across an issue where Visual ER Compare will be chugging along... looking like it is doing its stuff... then suddenly vanish... kaahpoohf...

There aren't any logs, there aren't any messages... the thing just isn't there anymore...

Any idea-ere's why it might just get raptured and vanish?

Suggestions are welcome!

Hi Daniel,

I suppose, it happens on your XE instead of on your B7331.
What is your SP level? It could be important.

Is it a recurring problem with more objects with different ER parts or just in a particular object and a particular ER part.

In the second case: Does your ER part contain something "special" or "suspect"?

My suggestion, if it is "only" a particular problem then use the old Copy/Paste method via CLP file.

Good luck,
Zoltán

Zoltan,

Actually, I do think that there is something 'suspect' within the specific objects I can't VER Compare. In each case I have attempted to compare objects between B7331 and XE - and the B7331 objects had been modded...

Any suggestion how I might get the specs from B7331 MS/SQL to an environment on XE AS/400? Atleast, then, I'd have a better chance of getting VER Compare to work correctly.

THANKS!

Hi Daniel,
If my memory serve me well, once (or more) upon a time I have already discribed the Copy/Paste method on the Forum.
Unfortunately I haven't time currently to detail it now, just briefly:
1.) Print your ER into a text file under B7331.
2.) Copy your ERs or ER parts to the ClipBoard and save them in ClipBoardViewer as .clp files under B7331.
3.) Create your custom sections, forms, controls etc. first on XE.
4.) Create your ER variables first, in the same order, scope and name. You can determine the order from your printed ER, further you can Copy/Paste the exact names from the text too. Be careful, place at least a comment into the event rules when the event is still empty, otherwise you can lose the variables (mainly the evt_) when you save an empty event.
5.) Save/Close/Re-open the designer.
6.) Open your .clp ERs with the ClipBoardViewer and paste it to the appropriate place.
7.) Double-click all pasted line, verify it and correct it if necessary.
8.) Save/Close/Re-open as often as you wish, my habit is often to do it.
9.) Test your modifications, etc. ...

Thats all briefly.

Have good Copy/Paste,
Zoltán
P.S.: Maybe I will try to find my mentioned previous post(s) on the Forum. Will let you know if found somethin useful for you.

Hi Daniel,
I searched for my mentioned post and found something.
Subject: "Re: ESU Merged Code Headaches" sent by Zoltan_Gyimesi on 8/8/01 10:09 AM to the OneWord / XE Developers Forum. Please, check it, maybe you can find some other hints for you.

FYI: I have already used the Copy/Paste method on different platforms, on B7321, B7331, B7332 and XE as well between different installations as re-applying mods after ESU as between different releases and installations. It worked for me.
ER Copy/Paste isn't possible between B732x and B733x.

Hope, could help a bit.
