Office XP

Is anyone using the new Office XP version of Access? We currently use MS
Access to insert data into OneWorld tables, will upgrading to the new
version cause a problem?

Thanks for your help,

I asked someone at JDE what version of Access the local jdeb7.mdb's were in
prior releases and in Xe and they told me they were Access 97. They also
recommended that if you have to do anything with the local Access database
and OW tables that you should use Access 97. However, I'm sure lots of
people out there are using Access 2000 to do things, as I have myself,
without any issues. Anyone else have any comments about this?

Well, this is a very good question, Lori!
Personally, I would direct it towards Response Line, too; the Win2000 desktop Technical Minimum Requirements asks for the MS Access 2000. What Maximum Requirements could be? I'd like to know them, too :)

Warm regards,
Adrian
PS Another reasonable question could be: Does MS Office XP require Windows XP?

Probably because you subscribed to the mailing list. If there is a problem,
please send an e-mail to [email protected].

Thank you.

MS Office XP does not require Windows XP. But it does require Windows 98 SE, Windows NT or Windows 2000.

We have been using MS SQL Server 7.0 Desktop Edition (SP2, Hotfix 851) since December 2000 for our salesreps. Access was too limited (size and performance).

Lori,

for your purposes (inserting data into OW tables) it shouldn't matter what version of access you are using. If you wanted to install XP on the Deployment Server there potentially could be a problem, but only if you wanted to update the contents of the JDEB7.MDB file on the deployment server directly using Access (which is sometimes neccessary - but there are work-arounds for that also).

Since you are most likely creating linked tables in an Access DB to your SQL Server DB via ODBC/OLEDB and then viewing/updating tables in that manner you are not using any DB format specific to Access - rather you are just using Access as a front-end to your SQL Server DB - which Access is very good at.

If there are any problems in this approach it would be a Microsoft problem linking Access XP to SQL Server 7. I doubt very much there is such a problem.

Try it on a limited basis (1 or 2 PCs) and let us know.

I talked with the JDE Response Line on this one. They have not certified
Office XP yet, their plans are to start certification testing some time
Early Fall. I asked Early Fall of what year and they did not think that was
too funny. Response line did not see why there would be a problem with
Access from XP, but use it at your own risk.
