Remote Control

Has anyone ever used a "Remote Control" software tool on the deployment server to install an ESU, ASU, or SP? I know there are tools available like PCanywhere, ControlIT, or Carbon Copy and was wondering if anyone has successfully used them.

I use PC Anywhere, but W2K doesn't like it during package assembly. It get a consistent error on the language selection screen during the define build. It totally crashes the application in OW (doesn't matter if W2K Prof or Server), while using
remote access. That's the only problem I've been able to find. I assemble & define the build on an NT workstation and then kick the build off either on the deployment server or a developer's workstation. It's difficult to get JDE to do
something about a problem with a third party product.

I use VNC ( http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ ) on our deployment server
for everything. I never even touch the box's keyboard. I've built packages
and installed service packs with no problem.

Are you using the new version of PCAnywhere 10.0 or an older version (9.2)
with Windows 2K. The Symantec website doesn't support PCAnywhere 9.2 or
older with W2k.

We saw some rather sporadic effects using W2K and PCAnywhere 9.2. So just
upgraded a few workstations. Not enough time to determine the difference.

We use a neat (freeware!) product called VNC. It is a really small
application, easy to install and operate. The only thing that I have noticed
with it is that the screen refreshes can sometimes be a bit sluggish. I know
it probably isn't supported with JDE, but it is a simple and free solution
for us to administer our JDE boxes. Check out the web and you should be able
to find a number of sites that have it for download, there is a client and
server portion to it, so be sure to get both if they happen to be seperate
downloads.

We use LapLink on both the Enterprise and Deployment Servers. But I only
use it to monitor the servers, never to build/install anything. However, at
our location the server room is at the other end of the building where the
System Administrators work, and we are using Paragon User Station and
Raritan CompuSwitch.

With these devices I can switch to any server on the Domain and work from my
desk. It's wonderful. Should you like more information, you can contact

Yes, we have and it works fine, a bit slow sometimes. When I need to work
from home, I dial into our Citrix server then use Remote Control software
Mcafee Remdsk32, and I am able to apply ESU's, build Packages, etc. without
any problems, it's great instead of coming physically into work to do these
task. Great tool to use for over the weekend tasks.

We've used NetOp from DanWare (www.danware.com) to remote control all of our servers including OneWorld for a couple of years now. Full featured, very solid and fastest remote control I've encountered.

Previously used pcAnywhere and but it seemed to be implicated in several server bluescreens.

We install all ESU/ASUs etc this way including XU1 - no problem. Probably not a good idea to run plan on a really major upgrade this way though (we didn't going from B73.2.2 to Xe) - if only to prevent JDE Tech Support finger pointing when something goes wrong.

I have the server version running on my PC at home and get into it now and
then from work, never had a problem. And it's freeware :)

I install it as at NT service and alot of our workstations on all our
servers and disable it by default. If I need to get into one them, I can
just go into server manager, turn it on, then connect. That way it doesn't
use any resources at all until you need it. And no one asks me what the
little white and green icon in the system tray is for.

We use MS NetMeeting and it's free also. It works great for accessing the desktop, but I've never tried it while performing some kind of update.

Thanks for all the info

Used PcAnywhere, didn't like it, tried Laplink ... the same. Someone on
this forum suggested Remote Administrator and I am very happy with it.
Small shareware fee is required (I think...quite a while back).

Upgrading to Xe
When upgrading to OneWorld Xe or Installing OneWorld Xe you can not use any remote software (ie: Remote Access, PC Anywhere, etc). You must be physically on the Deployment server with any such software disabled. This will cause parts of the Installation workbench to not run. Table Conversions and Control Table Merges especially should not be run using this software.

Our JDE consultants suggested and installed VNC viewer on all of the CNC
workstations, portables, and servers. I haven't seen any problems with it at
all, unless you talk to the Response Line.

The same applies for us as well. We are live on JDE financials and are on
VNC viewer for over 4 months now for remote troubleshooting. We are not
facing any problems. But JDE response line insists that we go in for
