OneWorld vs XE

Does anyone know where I can find an executive overview containing the major changes between OneWorld (Bseries) and OneWorld XE. Chad was kind enough to provide me with a link to the net changes documents on the knowledge garden but it is too detailed. I would like to get to the root mods / enchancements(pardon the pun). Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Eric,
I try to explain fast and briefly and if I will find a good site then I will send it too.

First was the "World" softwer. It was clearly an AS400 software that means:
* database resides on AS400 in its native database: DB2
* all applications run on the AS400 under the native operation system of AS400 named OS400
* user acces the Word software via an AS400 terminal that means: they has only keyboard and screen but nothing run localy, only keyboard and screen handling. World software is generaly named as "Green Screen". The display is character display vs graphical. This architecture is named as "Host" or "Host based"
* "World" was created in the native language(s) of AS400/OS400: RPG and CL

AS400 is an original product of IBM, generally named as "black box". It contains the followings as a unit (black box):
* Hardware
* low level base software
* operating system (OS400), including a lot of utility like text editor, etc. (contemporary: e.g. early UNIX and UNIX likes)
* datbase (DB2)
* programing languages: RPG and CL
* RPG: camed from the "punch card" programing time from the ancient time (hard to code on it)
* CL: the command language of AS400 (similar as batch under DOS or script under UNIX)

AS400 came from the world of "main frame" computers (contemporary: e.g. WAX computers) which already existed long time before PCs.
It is a quite different evolution way than for the other servers of today. They growed from the PC's world (Intel, HP and Alpha processor based).

There were a fast evolution on the hardware, software and application market.
Users began to require graphical user interfaces and multi functional desktop hardware, not only a terminal.
This was a big challenge for JDE because the competititon was big on the ERP market.

JDE decide that will develop an almost brand new software starting it from scratch. It is "OneWorld" software.
They preserved many things from World sw, like:
* Business Logic
* most of the logic of the database structure
* the main philosophy
* etc.

Main differences beetween World and OneWorld. (refering always to OneWorld):
* servers can be PC based
* architecture is named "Client - Server"
* the operraing system can be othe opsys like AIX, NT, HP UX (?)
* the user side computer has much more functionality in the system than the keyboard and screen, makes much more processing
* User has a Windows based Graphical User Interface (GUI)
* The user's machine is a PC under an oparating system (eg. Win 95, Win NT, OS2 (?) etc.)

JDE didn't want to lose their good World sw partners so they developed the new sw that World sw user be able easily to "migrate" to OneWorld sw, further they can use their AS400 machines (expensive enough!) in the new archtitecture too. This configuration is named as "co-existent".

As JDE enhanced (and corrected) OneWorld sw they issued newer and newer releases like: B732, B7321, B733, B7331, B7332 and the last B7333.
The main difference is between WORLD and ONEWORLD not between releases of OneWorld.

OneWorld XE is just one (and latest) release of OneWorld software, namely B7333.
Shortly: B7333 and XE is the same.

A lit bit more than one year ago JDE decided and announced that they will change the naming conventions of OneWorld releases/versions. It was the time when they announced that XE = B7333, and XE is the official name.
Maybe you can find these annoncments on the Knowledge Garden of JDE if you have access right to it.

That all for now.

Please, let me know that was it clear and understable enough, have you got the informations that you wished.
Do you have access to KG? If not and I will find these announcements and do you want it then I will send.

Thanks, and thanks all of your efforts on the Forum/List making it better and better for us.

Best regards,
Zoltán

Thanks for your post Zoltan. Your english is improving all the time (that
isn't a slam folks). What I am really interested in is what the major
differences have been since the first release of One World (B732).

Thanks.

The first release of OneWorld that ever got outside the development lab was
called B7A02. A01 died. After A02 came B7B also called B71.3. Then there
was B71.4. I don't recall a B72, I think that it died. Then came B73 base.
Then B73.1 and its variations. Then B73.2 in variations b732 base, b7321,
b7322, and if I recall correctly B7323 - actually a service pack release.
Then B733 base, B7331, B7332 and finally B7333 or Xe. Lately there is an
update 1 to Xe. Since before B7A02, they were all called OneWorld. The
original code name, Everest, still pops up every so often but the original
packaging said OneWorld. In other words, B732 wasn't the first version of
OneWorld. Sorry.

Re: RE: OneWorld vs XE

Eric,
Here is some additional:

Objects (in Object Librarian) are indentified based on Next IDs under B732.
JDE eliminated Next IDs for Object Librarian Objects starting from B733, so transportation of development and modified objects became much more easier
(note: but we was able to do that under certain circumtances in B7321 too).

Translation (language) method changed from B732 to B733.

News in XE:
* Object Management (dramatically changed)
* Product Packaging (development transfer), although it was in the earlier releases B733x, but it works much more better under XE
* Much more Interoperability possibility/feature/support
* Solution Explorer, by JDE plan to change OneWorld explorer
* Opening to the direction of e-commerce type (CRM, SCM, etc.)
* etc.

In my humble opinion, the best way to collect the major differences is to search for it on the JDE Knowledge Garden. It is the most authentic source.

Regards,
Zoltán

Re: RE: OneWorld vs XE

Excuse me, I forgot to include into my previous post:

Starting from B7332, JDE issues minor/major correction packets for OneWorld applications (not for core engine) as instalable ESUs/ASUs instead of the ealier Paper Fixes method.

re[3]: OneWorld vs XE

Eric,

Excuse me if I oversimplify what I perceive the question to be with my own response.

The major differences between B732 and Xe are;

Enhanced change management (OMW) This provides better (?) change controls. The same tools are there (Version control, check in, check out, object librarian) only used in a more controlled fashion.
The completion of all World modules into OneWorld. (Service Billing, Payroll, HR, Property Management) with a few minor enhancements to other modules.
Bug squashing

From the next release of OneWorld, the databases between World and OneWorld will no longer remain in sync. This is accommodate the many enhancements that have been requested and delayed to assist with the World to OneWorld migration process.

I would just correct one thing.

You said:
Bug squashing

Actually it's BUG SPRAYING (with consumer grade chemicals).
