Sales order processing issue

Does anyone have any insight on how to handle the sale of inventory cut
into variable (customer specified) lengths? Obviously, I am trying to
avoid having to set up a unique item number for every possible length (1' -
1000') of every SKU (several thousands). Additionally, fittings (many
possible SKU's and also customer specified) are attached to the ends of the
cut material and must be part of the sale. Optimally, this would all
happen as part of only one sales order detail line. It seems to me that
simple manufacturing would require a unique part number, and that using
kits runs into the same problem.

The other complexity is that the orders are not being manually entered, but
are being interfaced into JDE.

The problem seems to require two quantity fields (one for qty. and one for
length). Can JDE handle this?

How about setting up the item as a Steel Rod (or whatever it is) and stock
it in feet. Then simply sell
the quantity of feet that the customer wants to buy.

For the question on fittings, could you use a cross reference table by
customer to do a lookup? Since this is
an interface (and I'll assume you are using the Zfiles and Batch Order
Creation), you could do this lookup and create
additional F4011Z records for the fittings.

Hope these ideas help. Feel free to contact me if you need more.

Hi,
We sell pipe. We also put fittings onto the lengths of pipe to create
separate part number (job orders). We use FT as the primary uom, but have
our uom tables set up to convert for EA based on the full length of pipe
that will come off of our winding lines with a standard scrap cut of ends.
I hope this of some help.

The JDE Sales Configurator can handle everything mentioned in the first
paragraph of your inquiry. A different string ID number would be assigned to
each variation of your item (length & fittings).

I don't know about interfacing it with an outside program, but one of the
buzzwords associated with Xe is "interoperability" so in theory you should be
able to do it.
