On the iSeries - there is a memory area called QTemp.
Normal uses for Qtemp are creating work files or accessing data that is only specific to the job that is running.
For example, an iSeries CL may create an override or table in QTemp, then call a report that access those items in Qtemp. When the job ends - QTemp just vanishes.
Is there something like that in Oracle or in MS-SQL?

DB, Not that I am aware. You've started a couple of threads lately that have me missing some of those nice iSeries features (OVRDBF, QTEMP). I do miss that system sometimes. Quit remindin' us former 400 developers about the love we lost since moving to E1

Erg. . . I sure don't miss the 400, or the quirky solutions that IBM came up with. I'm generally happy to be done with the thing. Specialized solutions are always a headache when an iseries is involved.
The real hamstringing comes from E1 entirely, unless you're willing to write A LOT of code.
Temporary tables and 'what-not' are entirely possible in SQL. You can create tables, with definable columns and whatever, any time you want. The problem is how E1 holds your hands and expects everything to be 'defined elsewhere'.
Get hold of a SQL dev guide and marvel at all the things you're 'protected' from in E1. Now, try to find a client that will let you write code that exists outside of E1 that can leverage all that beautiful power.

D, I hear you and I agree about the limitations that E1 places on us as developers. Maybe that's what I'm truly missing about the 400. The OS and the DB and the developer tools are all transparently connected. JDE objects are just like any other objects in the system.
Green screen aside, as a business platform, that machine was nice to work with.

Hi,
SQL Server offers that same functionality. It's clearly explained here :

Thanks, Seb!
I needed to be able to see that!
